Interleague Clash: D’Backs vs Angels Betting Preview

Arizona 13-4 in their last 17 road games; 23-11 vs. right-handers in 2023

We start our D’Backs vs Angels betting preview by looking at the current MLB baseball standings. After losing six of their last 11 games, Arizona’s lead in the National League West is down to two games over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Snake has lost two straight series to the San Francisco Giants and Tampa Bay Rays. The Diamondbacks’ run differential is +34, ninth best in baseball. The Los Angeles Angels are also trying to stop their own skid after losing seven of their last 11 games. The Angels are six games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West. We continue our D’Backs vs Angels betting preview with an in-depth look at both clubs.

Henry Looking To Build Off Best Start

Lefty Tommy Henry (4-1, 4.31 era) gets the ball in game one for the Diamondbacks, coming off the best start of his season against the Washington Nationals. Henry gave up just one run in 6 ⅔ innings, helping Arizona to a 5-3 victory.

It was the third time in five starts that Henry has been able to pitch six innings or more. In that span, the Michigan native has given up 18 earned runs in 21 innings in that span (7.71era). Those numbers may not coincide with a pitcher who is used to going deep into games, but it does speak to how poor Henry has pitched in the two games where he failed to register a quality start. Arizona is 9-3 when Henry gets the start, including five straight.

The Angels will have plenty of chances to score on the former Michigan Wolverine with Henry allowing 63 hits in 62.2 innings pitched in 2023. The Diamondbacks averaged 7.01 runs per game when Henry starts. Arizona has produced 1006 units of profit for bettors this season, only the Cincinnati Reds (+1153), Baltimore Orioles (+1085 units), and Miami Marlins (+1022 units) have been more profitable. Let’s continue our D’Backs vs Angels betting preview by turning our attention to the Angels.

Canning’s Comeback Complete

Griffen Canning’s comeback is complete after missing a year and a half (2021, 2022) with a stress fracture in his back. Canning is back in 2023 with 12 starts under his belt and he’s been terrific to date. The lefty-hander is 6-2 with a 3.99era this MLB season and hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs since a May 10th outing against the Houston Astros (5 earned runs in 3.2 innings, 5-4 loss).

After, Cannings allowed just 12 earned runs in 41.1 innings (2.61 era). He’s been even better over his last two starts against Kansas City and Colorado with two earned runs in 12 innings (1.50 era). Since May 23rd, the former UCLA pitcher has allowed just 26 hits in his last 36 innings. The Angels are 6-2 when Canning starts. The Angels have cost bettors 112 units this season.

If they fail to finish in the black in 2023, it will be the sixth straight season where they’ve failed to produce a profit for the public. Since 2010, Los Angels has been a profitable wager just three times. Their 8147 units loss in that span is the seventh most in baseball. We conclude our D’Backs vs Angels betting preview with our official selection for game one.

Bettors Pounding Angels Early

With two players among the leaders in MLB MVP odds, Shohei Ohtani (-1400) and Mike Trout (+5000), it’s not hard to understand why the betting public likes to back the Angels on most nights. With 84% of the early moneyline dollars, tonight’s match-up with the Snakes isn’t any different.

We anticipate some Arizona buy-back but in games where Los Angeles is receiving more than 80% of the public money, they’re 7-6 (-184 units). When receiving more than 65%, the Angels are 15-14 (-428 units). The Halo’s opened a -148 consensus favorite, a number that has climbed to -151. The total is 9 ½ (-120 over). 87% of the money is on the under.

Arizona is 24-14 on the road (+1066 units). Only the Washington Nationals are better with 114 units won. Against teams .500 or better, the Snakes are 10-5 (+671 units), the third-best mark in baseball. Our official play is the Arizona Diamondbacks +130. That does it for our D’Backs vs Angels betting preview, we wish you all the best with your MLB wagers this weekend.
