Jays vs Twins Game 2: Minnesota Aims to Close Out Series

Berrios and Gray Get Starting Nods in Second Game

The Minnesota Twins are now one win away from advancing in the MLB playoffs after Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Toronto. Minnesota will send Sonny Gray to the mount to try and close things out. The Blue Jays will turn to Jose Berrios to try and keep the season alive. The Jays vs Twins Game 2 line has moved from Minnesota -127 to Twins -132 and the total is 7.5. The Twins are +160 on the run line.

Only two of the four teams on Tuesday’s MLB schedule were able to earn victories. It was a pretty low-scoring day, with three of the four games landing under the total against the MLB betting lines.

Toronto was 39-34 on the season after a loss and 22-16 when on the road after a loss. As an away underdog after a loss, the Blue Jays were 7-5.

The Twins posted a 45-42 record after a win and were 26-19 at home after a victory. As a home favorite, the Twins move up to 24-13, so both MLB teams are in situations they’ve fared well in during the season.

Starting Pitchers

Berrios pitched well for the Blue Jays this season despite not getting a lot of run support. He had an 11-12 record in 32 starts and a 3.65 ERA. Toronto averaged just 4.19 runs per game when he started. The Blue Jays were 17-15 in his starts and 10-18-4 in totals. When the Blue Jays scored three or more runs for Berrios, Toronto was 16-6. On the road, the Blue Jays were 9-8 in games Berrios started. Toronto was 8-7-2 in totals, scoring 4.76 runs, but allowing 4.29 runs.

Berrios faced the Twins just once during the season, throwing five scoreless innings in May – lifetime, he’s 3-2 against Minnesota.

Gray was 8-8 for Minnesota with a 2.79 ERA. The Twins went just 14-18 when Gray started due to lack of run support. Minnesota scored 3.72 runs for Gray and allowed 3.81. Minnesota was 13-18-1 in totals with Gray on the mound. The Twins were 13-9 when scoring at least three runs for Gray. At home, the Twins were just 7-10 with Gray starting and 7-9-1 in totals.

The Twins split two games against Toronto with Gray on the mound. He’s posted a 7-7 lifetime mark against the Blue Jays.

Betting the Game

It was a little surprising to see the Jays vs Twins Game 2 odds creep up to -132. Everybody knows it’s win or go home for the Blue Jays, and those are the types of teams the public typically likes to bet. But the public also loves its favorites, and may not have been able to pass up the Twins as small favorites.

The Blue Jays get a slight edge on winning with Berrios on the mound more often than the Twins win with Gray. It’s not a huge edge, because the Toronto hasn’t scored a ton of runs for Berrios during the season. But the Twins at -132 on the MLB betting lines makes it hard to pull the trigger on either side.

The best bet to make for the Jays vs Twins Game 2 is most likely going to be the under 7.5. The total is a bit on the low side, but both pitchers are capable of throwing a strong game and holding the opponent in check.
