Mariners vs Yankees Preview: Yankees Look to Rebound After Being Swept in Weekend Series

Kirby, Cole Set to Square off as Mariners and Yankees Embark on Three-Game Series

New York Yankees Struggling Without Reigning MVP Aaron Judge in Lineup

When looking at the Mariners vs Yankees preview, two teams in need of some wins are set to meet in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

The Mariners are 22nd in the majors with a .230 batting average in the month of June while the Yankees are last among the 30 MLB teams with a .192 average and .250 on-base percentage. The numbers could look much worse for the Mariners if not for Teoscar Hernandez hitting .353 with three home runs and Ty France having a .339 average with 10 runs scored. A bright spot for the Yankees has been Jake Bauers as he takes a five-game hitting streak into the series.

It likely won’t get much easier for the hitters with Seattle expected to go with George Kirby and the Yankees turning to Gerrit Cole in Tuesday’s series opener.

When looking at the MLB standings, the Mariners are in fourth place in the American League West Division while the Yankees are sitting in third place in the American League East.

The Yankees were second in the odds to win the World Series coming into the season with Seattle tied for ninth.

The Yankees championship odds have moved from +850 to +1200 since the season began. For the Mariners, the odds to win the World Series have gone from +2000 to +5000.

Welcome Home

Seattle is set to go with somebody who knows a thing or two about pitching in New York when the series begins.

George Kirby grew up in Rye, New York, just about a 30-minute drive from Yankee Stadium. However, Seattle is still listed as the underdog in the series opener according to the Mariners vs Yankees preview.

Kirby will be pitching in New York for the second time in his two seasons with the Mariners as he allowed three hits and three runs in four innings in a loss to the New York Mets in 2022. Kirby surrendered just three hits and no runs with seven strikeouts in eight innings in a win over the Yankees on May 31.

The total has gone over in six of Seattle’s last seven games against AL East teams.

All or Nothing for Donaldson

Since returning to the field, veteran third baseman Josh Donaldson is just 6-for-37 with 11 strikeouts. That is the bad news. The good news is that five of those six hits have been home runs.

The Yankees are 4-8 since Donaldson returned to action. All the blame can’t be put on his shoulders with Anthony Rizzo hitting .083 in June while Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Volpe, and DJ LeMahieu also hitting under .200 in June. Even with those frightening numbers, the Mariners vs Yankees preview has New York favored in the series opener.

The total has finished under in seven of the last nine games played by the Yankees.

Who’s Hot

  • Matt Brash, Seattle Mariners P: Brash hasn’t allowed a run in his last five appearances. He has allowed four hits and struck out 10 in 4.2 innings during that stretch.
  • Tommy Kahnle, New York Yankees P: Kahnle hasn’t allowed a hit or a run in his last five outings. He has six strikeouts in five innings during that span.
  • Cal Raleigh, Seattle Mariners C: Raleigh is 5-for-14 with a double, home run, three runs, and three RBIs in his last five games.
  • Gleyber Torres, New York Yankees 2B: Torres is batting .320 with three extra-base hits over his last eight games.

Who’s Not

  • Chris Flexen, Seattle Mariners P: Flexen has allowed 15 hits, four home runs, and 11 runs over 6.2 innings in his last four appearances.
  • Domingo German, New York Yankees P: German surrendered a season-high seven runs in just two innings in his last appearance.
  • Jarred Kelenic, Seattle Mariners OF: Kelenic is 3-for-20 with nine strikeouts in his last six games.
  • Giancarlo Stanton, New York Yankees OF: Stanton is 2-for-23 with nine strikeouts in his last seven contests.

Mariners vs Yankees Injury Update

Relief pitchers Trevor Gott, Penn Murfee, and Easton McGee are on the injured list for the Mariners.

Nestor Cortes is the latest Yankees pitcher to land on the injured list. Outfielder Harrison Bader is expected to be back for this series.

Mariners vs Yankees Betting Preview

The first game could be a showcase for the starting pitchers as Cole is ninth and Kirby 21st among qualified pitchers in earned run average.

Cole has a 2.00 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 18 innings in his last three starts. The last time he faced the Mariners, Cole allowed four hits and no runs with eight strikeouts in seven innings on Aug. 9 in a 1-0 loss in 13 innings.

Kirby has surrendered no runs in two of his last three starts.

The Yankees are favored in the series opener and are 27-19 when listed as a favorite this season. The Mariners are just 8-14 as the underdog.

Seattle has covered 18 of its first 32 road games with the Yankees just 17-21 against the spread at home this season.

The Yankees are priced at -129/+119 to win Tuesday’s opener with the total set at 7.5 (-105-115)
