Bones Hyland Stats: Can He Adapt His Game?

Bones Hyland Stats Don't Tell the Full Story

Make-or-Break Season Coming Up for Bones

Bones Hyland didn’t quite have the breakout season he was hoping for as he was traded from eventual NBA Champions Denver to the LA Clippers mid-season. Let’s look at some Bones Hyland Stats this season and see what’s next for the 22-year-old.

Hyland played 42 games for the Nuggets this on the NBA schedule this season, averaging 12.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his 19.4 minutes per game.

All of those raw numbers were an improvement on his rookie season, but questions surrounding his attitude became the topic of conversation before his parting ways with the Nuggets.

Coach Mike Malone started to shrink his rotations, and it was clear Hyland didn’t have a future in Denver. His below-average defense and shoot-first approach didn’t work in Mile High City and the question is whether he can carve out a successful NBA career given his tendencies.

His short stint in LA brought glimpses of his potential, but ultimately he was a non-factor when it mattered most as the Clippers were eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.

As a Clipper, Hyland’s NBA lines were 10.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 18.9 minutes per game. His potential as a microwave scorer off the bench is evident, but is that enough to overcome his deficiencies elsewhere?

Bones Hyland Stats: What the Advanced Metrics Say

The advanced numbers don’t paint a favorable picture of Bones Hyland in terms of his production or value in the league.

In the 2022/23 season, Hyland finished with a 14.9 Player Efficiency Rating (PER). The league average for this metric is 15.0, highlighting that his on-court impact is minimal as things currently stand.

He finished with a .535 True Shooting percentage, well below the league average of .580 this season. That’s a big concern for a player who is such a volume shooter.

Hyland averaged 18.9 field goal attempts per 36 minutes, and his inefficiency shooting the basketball greatly contributed to his poor 107 Offensive Rating.

His .062 Win Shares per 48 minutes on the season was also well below the league average. This is an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player per 48 minutes, with the league average being approximately .100 in the league.

Bones Hyland Stats 2022/23 Season

Hyland’s sophomore season in the NBA could have gone better for the player. If he’s to carve out a successful career in the league, his minutes must be more efficient, especially for a player who commands such a high usage rate off the bench.

The Clippers are a team in need of youth, energy, and scoring off the bench, which should make him the perfect fit for the team going forward. If he can buy into the system and gain the veterans’ trust in the locker room, we might finally see him take that step forward to reach his potential.

Here’s a look at Bones Hyland’s Stats for the 2022/23 season.
