Powerful Rookie Impressions

Let’s get obvious out of the way: Victor Wembanyama is the main reason why folks will pay attention to the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League. The first overall pick of this year’s NBA Draft is reported to debut against the team of the player picked after him: Charlotte’s Brandon Miller.

Wembanyama makes his NBA debut of sorts. The most-hyped prospect since LeBron James won the Pro A, France’s top professional basketball league, in 2022 and was the leading scorer, best defender, and MVP of the 2023 season. He also led France to the silver medal in the 2021 FIBA Under-19 World Cup.

As for Miller, he was named SEC Player of the Year and consensus second-team All-American in his only season with Alabama. He’s drawn comparisons to NBA MVP finalist Paul George. And in his Summer League debut, which came against a Wembanyama-less Spurs, he posted 18 points and five rebounds while shooting 5-of-11 from the field.

Prior to Wembanyama’s debut, Scoot Henderson and his Portland Trail Blazers take the floor against Amen Thompson’s Houston Rockets. Henderson was selected third overall with most pundits labeling him as the second-best prospect after Wembanyama. The spectacular point guard forms an exciting tandem with Shaedon Sharpe, the Blazers’ first-round pick from last year.

As for Houston, Thompson is their top pick as the fourth overall selection this year. The ultra-athletic guard is just one of many uber-talented 22-and-under NBA players on the team like Cam Whitmore, Jabari Smith Jr., and Tari Eason.

While Banchero sits out, Chet Holmgren makes his Las Vegas Summer League debut. The 2022 second-overall pick missed all of last season with an injury. He shook off the rust and finished with 15 points (6-of-14 shooting), nine boards, and four blocks in the Thunder’s win over Utah. Some NBA trends see him as Wembanyama’s competition for Rookie of the Year.

Holmgren has plenty of support in the prospect-rich Thunder with the Williams’s: Jalen and Jaylin, and Ousmane Dieng. And as for Dallas, it will pit 12th overall pick Dereck Lively II against Holmgren. The 19-year-old could be the next star big man and Dallas hopes it will be sooner rather than later.
