Not That Guy: Julius Randle’s Stats in Playoffs Expose Knicks Star

Playoff Struggles Overshadow Regular Season

Despite a pair of All-NBA seasons from Julius Randle, the New York Knicks star is unpopular in his city. And that’s mostly to do with his poor NBA playoff performances. In a place where winning is everything, Randle has failed to get much done in New York. As a result, his name has often come up in trade rumors. Just how much worse is Julius Randle’s stats in the playoffs?

Julius Randle’s NBA Career

Randle’s Prolific Regular Season Stats Not Enough?

In four regular seasons with the Knicks, Randle has averaged 22.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 4.6 assists on 44.7% shooting. That’s pretty good for a player being paid under $30 million a season in terms of average annual value (AAV). Under head coach Tom Thibodeau, Randle took his game to the next level. However, he’s become a victim of his success.

He won the Most Improved Player award in 2020-21 and made two All-Star games and two All-NBA selections. Randle sees his scoring get a boost to 23.2 under Thibodeau. But that all unravels in the postseason. Both Julius Randle’s stats and performance deteriorate in the playoffs.

The Knicks made it past Round 1 this last year but mainly due to the herculean efforts of point guard Jalen Brunson. Even R.J. Barrett outscored Randle, and Josh Hart was more effective in his limited touches. This won’t cut it, especially for one of the NBA leaders in the regular season.

Julius Randle’s Player Profile & Stats

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Randle with the seventh overall pick in 2014. He averaged 13.5 points and 8.9 rebounds with the Lakers before signing with New Orleans in 2018-19. This is where he had a breakout season and posted a career-high 21.4 points. This earned him a contract with the Knicks.

2022-23 Stats

The 28-year-old bounced back in 2022-23. Julius Randle’s stats resembled his 2020-21 season following an off-year in 2021-22. He helped the Knicks finish fifth in the Eastern Conference’s NBA standings. But in the playoffs, you can see a steep decline.

Pressure Stays on Randle

It would be unfair to Randle to consider him a “choke artist” when it’s the playoffs. A fairer assessment is that he overperforms in the regular season. He’s simply not “that guy” for the Knicks. However, shooting under 40% and scoring below 20 points won’t cut it if the Knicks are to make a deep playoff run.

The Knicks’ NBA schedule is not getting more accessible, as other East teams are improving. But as long as Randle stays this productive in the regular season, New York can, at least, make the playoffs.
