Dillon Brooks Stats’ Must be Taken With Grain of Salt
Overpaid Pest? Houston Bets Big on Everyone’s Least Favorite NBA Player

Dillon Brooks’ NBA Career
Dillon Brooks gets the last laugh. The notorious swingman just inked an $80-million deal to play for the Houston Rockets after the Memphis Grizzlies chose not to bring him back. For all his faults, Brooks is actually a solid two-way player and his selection to the All-Defensive Team proves he can back up most of his trash talk. But how does Dillon Brooks’ stats compare?
2022-23: Defense Sharpens, Offense Dulls
Brooks had a marquee 2022-23 when looking at his defense. He had a career-best 2.4 defensive win shares and -0.5 defensive box plus-minus. But his offense deteriorated. Brooks went from averaging 18.4 points on 43.2% shooting (career-highs) to 14.3 and 39.6%, respectively. Maybe it’s a regression to his career averages.
But while Dillon Brooks’ stats appear modest compared to his All-Defensive peers, Brooks’ main impact is his ability to put the attention of the opponents on him. It’s what “pests” do. Brooks will take on the opposing NBA teams’ best players.
Brooks is not afraid to take shots at them both on the court and during interviews. Sometimes it blows up in his face like what happened when he tried to insult LeBron James. It ultimately led to his exit from Memphis. Going to Houston, Brooks can start fresh as he’s now tasked to help lead a young team.
Brooks’ Player Profile & Stats
The six-year pro was drafted by Memphis in the 2nd round of the 2017 NBA Draft. He played three seasons with Oregon and was a consensus second-team All-American in his final year. Brooks also helped Team Canada win a silver medal in the 2015 Pan American Games.
Career Stats
Dillon Brooks’ stats tend to be inconsistent on a game-to-game basis. He tends to be a streaky shooter and he takes a lot of shots. But looking at his overall NBA stats, he’s actually been consistent at scoring around the 14 to 16-point range while shooting just a bit above 40% from the field. Not the best, but if coupled with his competitiveness and defense, teams will find value in his game.

Can Brooks Help Rockets Take Off?
Most NBA predictions did not foresee the Rockets signing both Brooks and Fred VanVleet to whopping deals. But Houston had a lot of cap room and a team of talented prospects all in their rookie deals.
Brooks was signed to be a starter and to help shore up the team’s defense. He’ll also divert heat from the young stars towards himself. Overall, $20 million a year might seem like a gross overpayment. But Brooks will reward Houston’s investment.
