Warriors vs Suns Analysis: Golden State Road Woes Continue

The Golden State Warriors Have Yet to Win a Road Game

The Phoenix Suns return home to Footprint Center after a long East Coast road trip in which they went 1-3. Devin Booker and company suffered losses to the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Miami Heat. They now sit at 8-5 on the season but are 6-1 on their home floor. The Warriors continue to struggle big time. They had a nice win over the Cleveland Cavaliers recently but also suffered a bad loss to the Sacramento Kings earlier this week. The Warriors have been terrible on the road this season, failing to win a single game with an 0-7 record.

When going through our Warriors vs Suns analysis, we thought the Warriors were getting a bit too much credit in the NBA against the spread at first glance, but when you take into account the NBA injuries that Phoenix is dealing with, this line makes sense. The Warriors are only two-point underdogs on the road against one of the best teams in the league. Could this be a spot where Golden State finally gets a road win? Let’s explore some angles in our Warriors vs Suns analysis.

Game Information

Golden State Warriors (6-8) at Phoenix Suns (8-5)

Date, time (TV):
Location: Footprint Center

Warriors Seeking Relevance

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact problem that the Golden State Warriors have had this season. Their record isn’t great despite having the sixth-easiest schedule in the league thus far. Plus, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have all performed up to their standards. The Warriors bench basketball players and some of the youth on their team have been an issue this season, but with the injuries the Suns are dealing with, Golden State should be able to take advantage of a weaker Phoenix roster.

Paul-Less in Phoenix Equals Disaster in Phoenix?

When it comes to assists per game, Chris Paul is one of the NBA stats leaders. However, he is listed on the injury report as questionable for tonight’s game as he continues to deal with a heel injury. Cam Johnson is also out for a significant amount of time with a torn meniscus. These are two huge blows to the Suns starting rotation. Cameron Payne and Torrey Craig have taken over their spots, but have been much less efficient both offensively and defensively.

Suns defensive rating has dropped to 27th in the league, compared to their top-3 ranking with him in the lineup.

Having Payne and Craig in the starting lineup also means that players deep within Phoenix’s rotation will see more playing time, which will be an opportunity the Warriors will need to take advantage of. Over the last three games without Paul, the Suns defensive rating has dropped to 27th in the league, compared to their top-3 ranking with him in the lineup.

Total Could be Best Bet

These two teams also met earlier this season when both rosters were fully healthy and the Suns won 134-105. Devin Booker had 34 points for Phoenix and will need to put up a similar performance if Phoenix wants to win this one. It’s also unlikely that the Suns shoot 51% from the field again, which will even out the NBA score a bit more.

This Warriors team isn’t going to be this bad for much longer. Their roster is too good and Steve Kerr is too good of a coach. Sooner or later they’re going to figure things out and we like them to do that on Wednesday night with an opportunity to make a statement on national TV in a revenge game from earlier this year. Therefore, our Warriors vs Suns analysis recommends taking the Warriors +2, or if you’re feeling risky, take Golden State to win outright at +110. The total for this game sits at 226.5 which we think is spot on.
