Coastal Carolina 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Chanticleers Are Good Sun Belt Team, But Not Much More

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers finished 2022 with a 9-4 record after losing to East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl. A solid record, but probably different from what Coastal Carolina was aiming for after starting the season 9-1. The defense let the team down a bit in the stretch and that could be the case again this season. The offense will be fine, especially with former N.C. State offensive coordinator Tim Beck is taking over the head coaching position. The 2023 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers stats could be better than last season’s if quarterback Grayson McCall can stay healthy.

Coastal Carolina Will be Offensive

McCall is the first player to win Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year three times. Don’t bet against him winning his fourth this season. Coastal Carolina returns its top two receivers from a year ago. The Chanticleers averaged 29.1 points per game but allowed 31.8. A 47-7 loss at James Madison has a bit to do with the negative scoring margin. But all four Coastal Carolina losses were by 19 or more points.

The Chanticleers were just 4-9 against the NCAAF lines, while the team was 8-5 in totals. It could very well be more of the same this year. McCall completed 69.7% of his passes for 2,700 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was intercepted just twice and also rushed for six TDs. He missed some time down the stretch, and it showed. The Chanticleers averaged 6.6 yards per play with him in the lineup. Coastal Carolina averaged 4.6 yards per play without him.

Receivers Sam Pinckney and Jared Brown combined for 120 receptions for 1,785 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. Tight end Jacob Jenkins caught just 11 passes on the season, but five of them went for touchdowns.

The defense is a cause for concern after Coastal Carolina allowed 6.5 yards a play last season. The pass defense was terrible, allowing over nine yards per passing attempt.

Coastal Carolina has to replace a few big men up front, but the Chanticleers are average against the run. Linebackers JT Killen and Tre Pinkney are both pretty good in run defense. Coastal Carolina does need to get pressure on the quarterback, which will help shield the secondary a bit. The 2023 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers’ stats against the pass have to be better than last year if the team wants to repeat as Sun Belt Conference East Division champions.

East Carolina transfer Juan Powell should help in the secondary. He was primarily a safety for the Pirates, and the Chanticleers need help in the back.

National Championship Odds: Not a Chance

You have a better chance of winning the lottery and being struck by lightning on the same day than Coastal Carolina has of winning the college football playoffs.

Conference Odds: A Bit of Value on Coastal Carolina

Coastal Carolina offers a bit of value at +400. That’s provided there is a little bit of improvement on the defensive side of the ball. The Chanticleers are going to put points on the scoreboard. It’s a matter of keeping the opposition from doing the same. Last year the Chanticleers were +350 to win the Sun Belt, so there hasn’t been a big change.

Regular Season Wins: Last Year’s Bettors Suffered Bad Beat

If you wagered over 7.5 wins last season for Coastal Carolina, you suffered one of the worst beats of the season. Even though the Chanticleers won nine games, several sportsbooks voided the season win totals when the game against Virginia was canceled. Even though Coastal Carolina went over the wins total with one fewer game played than expected, your wager was invalid.

This year, Coastal Carolina is going against a win total of 8.0 (under -120) and the Chanticleers can win nine or 10 games. Coastal Carolina will be saddled with a loss coming out of the gate and making the trip to UCLA. But the NCAA predictions have the Chanticleers going 9-3, provided they win the games they’re supposed to win. That’s usually easier said than done.

Coastal Carolina has James Madison at home, but Appalachian State and Army on the road won’t be easy games. But the Chanticleers also have the lines of Duquesne and Jacksonville State, which should be easy wins.

Ultimately, it will come down to McCall’s health and the defense. If the 2023 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers’ stats on defense aren’t better than last season, eight wins could be the max. If the defense plays even a little better, Coastal Carolina should manage to sneak over the wins total.
