Toledo Rockets 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Rockets Favored to Take Mid-American Conference

The Toledo Rockets were 7-5 during the regular season last year, falling short of the team’s eight wins for its season wins total. But the Rockets finished with seven wins. Toledo went on to defeat Ohio in the MAC Championship game. The Rockets followed that up with a victory over Liberty in the Boca Raton Bowl to wind up 9-5 for the season. Toledo has higher aspirations this season, and the 2023 Toledo Rockets stats could be huge offensively with QB Dequan Finn returning.

Toledo’s Defense Will Determine Team’s Fate

There’s little question the Rockets are going to be explosive on offense. Finn threw for 2,260 yards and 23 touchdowns last season despite missing time toward the end of the season. He also rushed for 631 yards and nine touchdowns. Finn’s willingness to take off with the football increases his chances of missing time. But Tucker Gleason filled in admirably as a freshman. Gleason completed just 47.5% of his passes but had eight TDs and three interceptions while rushing for three more scores.

Leading rusher Jacquez Stuart returns for the Rockets. However, the Rockets like to spread the ball around and had three running backs with between 116 and 134 carries. Four of the five offensive linemen are back, so the running backs should have some holes to run through.

Toledo loses a bit at receiver, where DeMeer Blankumsee moved to Memphis and tight end Jamal Turner graduated. But there is still plenty of talent on the roster, beginning with Jerjuan Newton, who had 53 receptions for 830 yards and nine touchdowns.

The key to the defense will be upfront, where the Rockets lost a few players, including Jamal Hines and Desjuan Johnson. The pair combined for 12 of Toledo’s 34 sacks last season.

Linebacker Dallas Gant led the Rockets with 115 tackles and is back. However, second-leading tackler Dyontae Johnson is now with the New York Giants. The Rockets will need a few players to step it up a notch.

The Toledo secondary is the strength of the defense and the best group of defensive backs in the MAC. The 2023 Toledo Rockets’ stats against the pass will be strong once again. Quinyon Mitchell, Maxen Hook, and Nate Bauer are among the returners.

National Championship Odds: No Chance for Rockets.

Last year the Rockets were +25000 to win the national title. This year, Toledo is +100000. Even that’s too low.

Conference Odds: Toledo Favored to Repeat as Champions

A year ago, the Rockets were one of four teams at +400 to win the MAC before the season began. By Week 3, the Rockets were all alone as the MAC favorite. This year, Toledo didn’t have to wait as long to be made favorites. The Rockets, who should lead the college football standings in the MAC’s West Division, are the solid favorite heading into the season.

Regular Season Wins: Rockets Saddled With Lofty Number

The Rockets were tagged with a win total of 9.5 this season and it’s entirely possible for Toledo to get 10 wins. But it’s not going to be easy. The Rockets open the season with a game at Illinois, which will be tough for Toledo. The early line has Illinois favored by 10 points. Toledo was just 5-9 against the NCAAF spreads last season and lost its only game as an underdog.

But after Illinois, the remaining games are all winnable. Some of them will be tough, such as Eastern Michigan and Buffalo. But Toledo has those two teams at home. The toughest conference road games could be against Bowling Green or Miami, and both those teams are expected to be around .500.

After the trip to Illinois, the Rockets have four straight games at home. Toledo should win them all. If the Rockets start September with a 4-1 record, getting to 10 wins is a definite possibility.

The one thing that can hurt Toledo is itself. The Rockets have to take better care of the football and that starts with Finn. After throwing for 18 touchdowns and two interceptions in 2021, his 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last year were a step backward. The 2023 Toledo Rockets stats in regard to turnovers will be big this season. If the Rockets play clean football, another MAC title and 10 wins are within reach.
