Maryland 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

'Terps Coming off Consecutive Bowl Wins for 1st Time Since 02-03

The Maryland Terrapins continue to make gains under head coach Mike Locksley. The Terrapins went 8-5 last season and beat North Carolina State 16-12 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, winning consecutive bowl games for the first time since 2002-03. With their standout quarterback back in the fold, the Terrapins’ expectations have grown. What’s the team’s ceiling?

Read on as we break down some key 2023 Maryland Terrapins stats in our team preview.

Terrapins Headed in the Right Direction

Maryland is coming off its best season under Locksley and is 17-14 since 2020. After back-to-back bowl victories, the question now is whether the Terrapins can climb further up the Big Ten standings. Taulia Tagovailoa is back, giving Maryland one of the conference’s most accomplished, experienced quarterbacks. Tagovailoa — the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa — holds the school record for passing yards (7,879), passing touchdowns (51), completions (665), completion percentage (67.4), and total yards (8,067).

The Terrapins’ hopes will rest largely on his continued development. After an 8-5 finish, expectations are higher. Anything short of another bowl would be a big disappointment. There are holes in the defense. Star cornerback Deonte Banks is off to the NFL, drafted 24th overall by the New York Giants. The Terrapins allowed an average of 23.1 points last year. Can they continue to improve in that regard? Expect better 2023 Maryland Terrapins stats.

National Championship Odds: Not This Year

It’s a nice thought but, uh, no. Even with a reliable quarterback, the Terrapins aren’t ready to compete on this level. Back-to-back bowl victories are a big accomplishment in itself, one that should be celebrated after almost a decade of irrelevance. Randy Edsall failed. So, too, did D.J. Durkin. The Terrapins find themselves in far better shape now with Locksley. But the national championship? No. Not this year. The Terrapins remain extremely longshot at +25000.

Conference Odds: Something Else About the Team’s Conference Chances

The Terrapins are getting a lot more consideration than last season when they were priced at +15000. Still, it feels like there’s a ceiling on what they can accomplish. Can they sneak into the Top 5 of the Big Ten? Sure. But that’s about it. Ohio State and Michigan are national title contenders. Penn State and Wisconsin may be on the next tier. Then you have Maryland, a bowl contender that’s unlikely to hang with the upper-echelon NCAAF teams.

Regular Season Wins: Soft Opening Bodes Well

Maryland’s non-conference schedule is, how shall we put this, quite underwhelming. After opening with the FCS program Towson and Charlotte, the Terrapins will host Virginia, which is projected to finish toward the bottom of the ACC. Nevertheless, that should benefit the Terrapins as they try to exceed projections for the third consecutive year. In 2022, they were pegged for 6.0 wins. The Big Ten will be a bear, with games against Ohio State (Oct. 7), Penn State (Nov. 4), and Michigan (Nov. 18), but there are enough winnable games mixed in.

To Make Playoffs: Don’t Count On It

Last year was another step in the right direction under Locksley, but the Terrapins aren’t ready to make this kind of jump. No chance. Not in one of the toughest NCAAF conferences. Oddsmakers aren’t even considering it.
