Model of Consistency Under Monken

Monken is second on the program’s career wins list with 102, 19 behind Red Blaik. Army went 6-6 in 2022 and has finished .500 or better in six of Monken’s nine seasons at the helm. Five of those seasons concluded with bowl appearances, including in 2018 when the Black Knights cracked the national polls for the first time in more than two decades.

The Black Knights are projected for 6.0 wins in 2023, which would again leave them at .500. Whether they can meet or even exceed those expectations will likely depend largely on how Monken moves forward at quarterback.

Tyhier Tyler, who was second among FBS quarterbacks in rushing touchdowns (12) last season, has departed. Tyler’s absence leaves a big void given the complexity of the Black Knights’ option offense. Last year, they finished second in the country in rushing (289.4 yards/game) behind Air Force. For what it’s worth, new offensive coordinator Drew Thatcher would like to mix in more passing plays to make the offense more unpredictable. Will it work? There are also questions on defense following the departure of the star outside linebacker Andre Carter II.

Carter II, who’s second on the program’s all-time sacks list with 20, signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. There’s a lot to unravel, but fortunately, Monken has proven adept at reloading his roster on the fly. This year should be no different. Expect to see some quality 2023 Army Black Knights stats.

National Championship Odds: It’s a Nice Thought, But…

No chance. Army’s odds have dropped from +25000 last preseason, and even those seem too short. Monken has done well to accrue talent despite obvious limitations on recruiting, but there’s a cap on what the program can accomplish. Army did win back-to-back Associated Press national titles in 1944 and 1945, but those were different times.

Conference Odds: Still Independent

Army has competed as an independent with the exception of 1998-04 when it was a member of Conference USA. It is no longer affiliated with a particular conference for football.

Regular Season Wins: Schedule’s a Grind

Since 2017, Army is 50-26, the best record among service academies. That includes a 6-6 mark last season. The Black Knights didn’t meet expectations — they were projected for 8.5 wins — but they were able to salvage their season by beating Navy. Can they do better in 2023? The schedule is tricky. Louisiana-Monroe and Delaware State should make for a good start. Army is currently a 7.5-point favorite over the Warhawks, per NCAAF odds.

However, it picks up in difficulty, with games at UTSA, Syracuse, and, wait for it, LSU. Yeesh. Troy and Coastal Carolina will also visit West Point. And don’t forget the 124th Army-Navy game, one of the most anticipated college football games on the schedule. The good news is, the Black Knights have won at least six games in six of the last seven seasons. Still, getting there again won’t be easy.

To Make Playoffs: Don’t Count on It

As an independent, Army does not have a primary BCS bowl tie-in. Regardless, it doesn’t really matter. The Black Knights’ chances of crashing the College Football Playoff party are slim to none. Oddsmakers are not even entertaining the possibility.
