LSU Tigers 2023 Future Odds: National Championship

LSU's Game at Alabama Could Determine Playoff Hopes

The LSU Tigers won 10 games last season and the Southeastern Conference West Division title last year and are primed for more. The return of quarterback Jayden Daniels and wideout Malik Nabers will help the offense. A full return to health by Maason Smith will help the defense. Alabama will be favored to win the division, but there’s no reason LSU can’t make things interesting in the West. The 2023 LSU betting odds show the Tigers are getting a bit of respect from bettors this season.

Tigers Claw Their Way Back to Upper Echelon

The LSU Tigers surprised several people last season. That won’t happen again, but the Tigers have the talent to make another serious run at the West Division title and a playoff berth. Last season, LSU’s win total was just 6.5, and the Tigers won nine regular season games and finished 10-4. The Tigers were 8-6 against the NCAAF odds.

Playing in the Southeast Conference, it goes without saying LSU will play a tough schedule. Fortunately for the Tigers, most of the tough foes are at home. The biggest exception is the Nov. 4 game at Alabama. That contest could go a long way in determining the West Division winner and who advances to the SEC Championship game.

LSU returns eight starters on offense, with Daniels the key. He threw for 2,913 yards last season with 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Daniels also led the team with 885 yards and 11 touchdowns. Nabors led the team with 72 receptions for 1,017 yards. Last year’s third-leading receiver, tight end Mason Taylor, is also back.

Only five starters return on defense, but LSU brought in a few transfers to help in the secondary. Smith played just one quarter for the Tigers in 2022 and is one of the nation’s best defensive linemen. Linebacker Harold Perkins had a big season as a freshman and will be looking to build on his first year. LSU may not be as good as last year, but they’ll still be a tough defense.

Tigers’ Title Possible, But Still a Longshot

It’s not inconceivable the LSU Tigers win the national championship. But it is unlikely and would likely require victories over Alabama and Georgia. That’s probably not going to happen. But the Tigers did beat Alabama last season. Georgia was different, as the Bulldogs won the SEC title game 50-30. If the Tigers can somehow win the SEC, they’re a definite contender. Getting out of the SEC is going to pose the toughest challenge.

Conference Odds: LSU Has Fighting Chance

Last season the Tigers were +5000 to win the Southeastern Conference. The 2023 LSU betting odds have the Tigers at +500. That’s quite a difference. But again, it will come down to beating Alabama on the road in a revenge game for the Crimson Tide. Then LSU will need to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship contest. Both those teams are likely to be extremely high in the NCAAF rankings.

Regular Season Wins: Tigers Can Get There, But Can’t Stumble

LSU exceeded last year’s win total in its ninth game of the season. The 2023 LSU betting odds showing 9.5 wins makes sure the Tigers are going to need a few more games to do it this year. But it is a definite possibility. Still, the Tigers can’t afford an upset along the way. The Tigers open the season against Florida State in Orlando, so it’s not a true home game for the Seminoles. LSU also travels to Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and the previously mentioned game at Alabama.

But LSU does get several tough customers, including Auburn, Texas A&M, Florida, and Arkansas at home. The Tigers do have the talent to win 10 games but will have to win the games in which they are favored in. There’s little room for error on LSU’s schedule this season.

To Make Playoffs: One Loss Maximum For LSU

If LSU can make it through the SEC title game with a single loss, the team has a good chance to make it in the playoffs. It doesn’t matter if the loss is to Alabama in the regular season or Georgia in the SEC Championship. A two-loss LSU team won’t advance. The 2023 LSU betting odds are -500 against the Tigers making the playoffs for a reason. The Tigers will be good, but the playoffs will be an uphill climb.
