Marshall vs Notre Dame Betting: Fighting Irish Ready to Bounce Back after Loss to Ohio State

Marshall Figures to Have Their Hands Full With a Fired-Up Notre Dame

Nationally Ranked Notre Dame Fired up for Home Opener

Things are about to get real for the Marshall football team. The Thundering Herd ran 51 times for 380 yards without star back Rasheen Ali in a season-opening win over Norfolk State. However, Marshall is not playing Norfolk State on Saturday. The Thundering Herd is heading to South Bend to face a Notre Dame that is looking to bounce back after squandering halftime lead to No. 2 Ohio State. The Marshall vs Notre Dame betting odds currently show the Fighting Irish as a 19-point favorite.

With Notre Dame losing in the Fiesta Bowl to Oklahoma State in the final game of the 2021 season. The Fighting Irish haven’t lost three games in a row since dropping the last two games of the 2016 season to Stanford and Ohio State and then opening contest the following season at the hands of Texas.

Even with a season-opening loss to Ohio State, and the point spread Notre Dame looking to mix this one up; they are (+5000) tied for the eighth best odds to win the national champion. Marshall is well back at +50000.

Marshall Thundering Herd

The good news for Marshall is that the Notre Dame defense looks susceptible against the run in the season opener as Ohio State averaged nearly five yards per carrying. The question is whether the Thundering Herd could put up similar numbers as the status of last year’s leading rusher Rasheen Ali is up in the air. It is no wonder that the Marshall vs Notre Dame betting odds favor the host, Fighting Irish.

Ethan Payne and Khalan Laborn both rushed for more than 100 yards against Norfolk State. The Thundering Herd will try to establish the run once again against Notre Dame.

Quarterback Henry Colombi was nearly perfect in the opener as he completed 24 of 26 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown pass. One of his incomplete passes was intercepted and that was his only real blemish for the former Utah State and Texas Tech quarterback

Talik Keaton led the way with 71 yards on a career-best eight receptions.

Seniors Charlie Gray and Koby Cumberlander combined for 15 tackles.

The Marshall vs Notre Dame betting odds are predictably not in favor of the visiting Thundering Herd; however, this is a game that will help Marshall make the move from Conference USA to the Sun Belt.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

With Brian Kelly now coaching at LSU, Marcus Freeman kicked off his tenure as Notre Dame’s head coach and for a half, it was looking good with the Fighting Irish throwing a scare into a talented Ohio State team in the 2022 opener.

With an offensive line full of potential future NFL players, it was rather surprising to see the Fighting Irish struggling to run the ball in the opener. Notre Dame averaged 2.5 yards on 30 carries in the loss to the Buckeyes. Quarterback Tyler Buchner had 11 of those 30 rushing attempts so expect to see the running backs featured more on Saturday. The Marshall vs Notre Dame betting odds are calling for the Fighting Irish to bounce back in a major way.

Buchner averaged 17.7 yards on his 10 completions in his first start at Notre Dame. Only three completions went to wide receivers, but they were for 117 yards. Star tight end Michael Mayer had just 32 yards on a team-high five catches so expect his yards per catch numbers to improve.

The defense had a much stronger showing than the offense against perhaps the more talented offensive team in the country and that was especially true in the first half.

Notre Dame is looking to improve on its numbers of two tackles for loss and one sack in the 2022 opener.
