Olamide Zaccheaus: Returning Close to Home

Receiver Signs With Philadelphia Eagles

Zaccheaus Returns Home: Eagles Bound for Growth and Success

Olamide Zaccheaus is banking on a return to his old stomping grounds to improve his numbers, signing a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s also banking on himself. He could have easily gotten a two- or three-year deal from somebody. But he believes a return home and a new team will help him continue to grow.

It’s hard to argue with his assessment. Since coming into the NFL as an undrafted free agent, Zaccheaus has done nothing but get better every year. With the Falcons last season, Zaccheaus caught 40 passes for 533 yards and three touchdowns. But those numbers don’t tell the whole story. Zaccheaus’ stats took a big hit when rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder was forced into action. He had just eight receptions over the last four weeks.

At 5-foot-8, Olamide Zaccheaus isn’t a big target, but at 193 pounds, he’s built like a tank. His 4.8 yards after catch was 20th in the NFL last season. He has a solid burst of speed and good strength. Zaccheaus is a versatile player who can return kicks and also was Atlanta’s emergency quarterback. He’s a good guy to have around.

He saw his stats improve each year in his four seasons with Atlanta. He went from just three receptions as a rookie to 20 in his second year. In 2021, Zaccheaus had 31 receptions and three touchdowns before turning it up another notch last season. Of his 94 career receptions, 65 have been for a first down.

From the Eagles standpoint, Zaccheaus gives the team another threat from the receiver position. Already having A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, Zaccheaus has an opportunity to win the slot receiver battle. He’s an excellent blocker, something fans don’t care for but coaches do. He has an excellent relationship with backup QB Marcus Mariota, which will help.

The mindset of the Eagles will be a different atmosphere for Zaccheaus. He’s going from a team that never won more than seven games while he was there to a team almost always favored in the NFL lines. It will be a bit of a culture shock for Zaccheaus to find himself on the right side of the NFL scoreboard consistently.

Olamide Zaccheaus could have played it safe and signed with a team with less talent at the receiver position than the Eagles. But he wants to win and wanted to return near where he grew up. The Eagles had one of the best NFL records of the last few years in 2022. Philadelphia gives him an opportunity to win and contribute to the team’s success. That’s all Zaccheaus wants to do.
