The Philadelphia Flyers (25-17-6, 56 points) head to Detroit to take on the Red Wings (24-18-5, 53 points) in a battle of teams who are looking to make a return visit to the postseason. Philadelphia is five points behind the New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division but, after three straight losses, just three points ahead of the Red Wings for the last wild card spot. Oddsmakers have made the Wing a -130 favorite with a total of 6.5 (over -120). Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT. We start our Flyers vs Red Wings betting odds preview by looking at Philadelphia from a betting perspective.
Flyers Better Find Their Defense Quick
It’s been about a month since the Philadelphia Flyers lost to the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout, 7-6. Since that game, the Flyers are just 7-8 for bettors, even if it is technically 5-6-4 when it comes to the standings. They’ve spun their wheels partly because of a lack of defense.
Overall this season, the Flyers are ninth in the league with a 2.85 goals-against average, but if we include that loss in the numbers, Philly has given up 3.38 goals per game and 18 over their last three (6.0 per game). That’s not going to cut it down the stretch and into the NHL playoffs. To make matters worse. Goaltender Carter Hart has announced that he will take an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons. Story coming on that, according to insiders.
John Tortorella was not happy, for the lack of a better word, after the team’s recent 6-3 loss to the Lightning. The target of his ire was his team’s 1-3 PK performance, which has been a season-long strength for the Flyers after killing off 85.2% (2nd in the NHL).
Wings Let Victory Sip Away At Dallas
It would be fair to say that the Detroit Red Wings outplayed the Dallas Stars for most of the night. The problem was the second period when the Stars scored four five-on-five goals to take a commanding lead into the final 20 where they just had to hang on, precisely what they did when the Wings scored twice to make it 5-4. Other than the middle 20, Detroit had the best of Dallas, outscoring the Stars 4-1.
The Red Wings were outshot 25-7 in the middle stanza but had the best of the Stars with a 27-13 shot advantage in the first and third periods. It isn’t all bad for Derek Lalonde’s team, who has managed to rack up points in all but two games in their last 10 games.
The focus against the Flyers will be to play a full 60 minutes while eliminating turnovers, but if it’s anything like their last meeting, it will be one of the most entertaining NHL scores of the night. We conclude our Flyers vs Red Wings betting odds preview with our official selection.
Current Form Says Wings Are The Side
When you examine Detroit’s last 12 games, it’s clear that the Wings could easily be on a 12-game winning streak because even in defeat, they led or were tied heading into the third period. It looks like the betting public has picked up on that, with the number ticking up slightly, which means it’s a good idea to jump on Detroit as soon as possible because bettors will focus on the Flyers’ recent form and throw money at the Red Wings. Our official NHL pick is Detroit -130.
