The Bill Belichick Era Is Over, and Jerod Mayo Is Now Pulling the Strings in New England

In NFL news, the New England Patriots have announced that Jerod Mayo, former player, and assistant to Bill Belichick, will take over as the team’s new head coach.
New Day Dawning
Jerod Mayo, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2008 draft by the New England Patriots had a career many NFL players would envy. He played in 103 NFL games with the same team that drafted him until his retirement in 2015.
Mayo made the Pro Bowl twice and won a Super Bowl but you won’t find the versatile linebacker’s plaque in the Hall of Fame. Yet, to be fair, there are many Hall-of-Famers who don’t have their names on a Super Bowl trophy.
Jerod Mayo has had quite the career:
– 4-star recruit out of high school
– Second Team All-American as a Sophomore and Junior
– First team All-SEC
– 10th overall pick in NFL Draft
– Defensive Rookie of the Year
– All-Pro
– Two time Pro Bowl
– NFL Leader in Tackles

Mayo returned to Foxboro in 2019 as a linebackers coach for Bill Belichick and showed immediate promise. If you believe the NFL rumors, he was held in such high regard that Bob Kraft guaranteed him the head coaching job once Belichick left. Perhaps that is why he opted out of the running for last year’s head coach opening in Carolina.
Nevertheless, he ultimately got what he wanted and is now the man who replaced Bill Belichick in Foxboro. It’s nearly impossible to follow a legend but Mayo will be able to carve his legacy and be free to form a coaching staff that is familiar to him and makes him feel more at ease.
Shortly after the Patriots’ season-ending loss to the Jets, the new Patriots coach was asked about his future with the team, perhaps already knowing which way the wind was blowing in Foxboro.

Mayo responded, “When I think about when I do get my opportunity, I don’t know when that’s going to be, honestly, I’m kind of like a dry leaf blowing in the wind, wherever (it) takes me. But at the same time, I feel like I’m prepared. I feel like I’m ready. I look forward to the opportunity, wherever that may be.”
He was recently asked about his coaching style and Mayo said, “I coach out of love. Once you build that relationship with a guy, you can be tough on the players. But if you don’t have that warmth before confidence; it was a little different when I played. Whatever the coach told you to do, you just go out and do it. But this generation is a little bit different. They want to understand the ‘why.'”

And those last two sentences may very well be why Bill Belichick is out and Jerod Mayo is in. Some have intimated that last season Belichick lost his locker room for the first time since he came to New England and Mayo, being just 37 years old, would make an instant connection with the players.

Despite candidates with much more experience being available, Patriots owner, Bob Kraft, tapped his in-house candidate to whom he allegedly promised the job verbally, if not in writing. And maybe this lifelong Patriot is exactly what the franchise needs after missing the playoffs in three of the last four years.
