BK Hacken Stats & History
Lower League Years
A group of teenagers created BK Häcken in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1940. In the early years, Hacken only played a few matches, which were mostly in youth championships. In 1943, they started playing at the senior level and went from class four to class one in that span of just four years.
Hacken were relatively successful early on and won Division 4 in 1950 and Division 3 in 1951. They nearly earned promotion to the Allsvenskan in 1953 but lost to Kalmar FF. In 1954, they got relegated from Division 2, though. They languished in the lower tiers for the better part of 30 years.
Häcken spent most of the 1960s as a Division 3 team, but they went down to Division 4 in 1967. They fell on financial hardship and went down to Division 5 in the early 1970s. There were talks of a merger with IF Warta but club members voted against it.
In 1971, they won Division 5 and won Division 4 in 1975. Häcken continued to climb the Swedish football ladder as they won Division 3 in 1977. Häcken very nearly advanced to the Allsvenskan for the first time in 1981 but lost to Elfsborg in a promotion playoff.
First Promotion
BK Häcken finished in 2nd place in 1982 and once again qualified for the promotion playoffs. They managed a 3-1 aggregate win vs. IFK Norrköping to seal the first promotion to the Allsvenskan in the BK Häcken standings. In their first top flight season, Häcken finished in last place and played in the second division for the rest of the 1980s. In 1990, they made the Svenska Cupen final for the first time but lost 3-0 to Djurgardens.
Häcken returned to the Allsvenskan for the second time in 1993 and managed a sixth place finish. Their stay in the top flight was short once again, as they went back down to the second tier after 1994. They stayed in the second tier until 1997, which started a period of four promotions and three relegations from ‘97 to 2008.
First European Appearance and Major Trophies
The first UEFA competition appearance in the BK Häcken standings was the 2007-08 UEFA Cup. They progressed through the qualifying rounds but lost 8-1 to Spartak Moscow in the first round. In 2012, Häcken finished in second place in the Allsvenskan, which was their best-ever performance to date.
Striker Waris Majeed scored 23 goals, which made him the top scorer in the BK Häcken standings and Allsvenskan. In 2016, Häcken finally won their first major trophy by defeating Malmo in the Svenska Cupen final. In 2019, Hacken won the Swedish Cup again at their home stadium and beat AFC Eskilstuna 3–0. Finally, in 2022 BK Häcken won the Allsvenskan and became Swedish champions for the first time ever.
In May 2023, BK Häcken won their third Swedish Cup as Ibrahim Sadiq scored twice in a 4-1 win over Mjallby. In 2023, Häcken will play in the group stage of the Europa League for the first time ever. Those interested in betting on the Europa League odds should note they’re in a group with Bayer Leverkusen, Qarabag and Molde. Betting advice for Häcken notes they’ve never had a sustained period of success quite like the one they’re currently in.
