Messi’s 2022 World Cup Jerseys Sell for $7.8 M

The Six 2022 Qatar World Cup Jerseys Were Auctioned for an Almost Record-Breaking $7.8 M

Qué Mirás, Bobo?😂

Imagine selling something for $7.8 million and being disappointed. That’s the case for a New York auction house that just sold six of Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup Jerseys for $7.8 million.

This may be the most expensive six-pack ever.

I am likely exaggerating a little on being disappointed but the auction company did shoot its shot before the sale predicting the set of jerseys would top the record. Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA finals jersey fetched $10.1 million in 2022. The auction house shared soccer rumors that Messi’s six-pack would top MJ but to no avail.

What Is the Security Like at These Jersey Places?

Call me paranoid, but I just got done watching a Netflix heist documentary where all these fine art pieces were stolen at a gallery. Sotheby (the fancy auction house name) had Messi’s 2022 World Cup Jerseys on display during the two weeks of bidding.

Safe to say someone lost some sleep over those two weeks worrying that the kits were in safekeeping. I get paranoid when I lose one of my AirPods, so I know the feeling.

Jokes aside, good on Sotheby for allowing fans to get a glimpse of history before the auction company got the bag for the Messi memorabilia.

“These historic shirts are not only a tangible reminder of one of the most important moments in the history of sports, but are principally connected to the pinnacle moment in the career of the most decorated football player in history,” Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles Brahm Wachter said in a statement, per the Associated Press.

I will say this is a pretty sweet display. Does the $7.8 mil include these sick cases?

Messi Is a Global Icon and His Move to America Only Enhances His Legacy

Think about all the places Messi has played over his career. Messi is an icon in Argentina, but the soccer star has also played in some of the world’s top cities. The striker has had stops playing in Paris for PSG and Barcelona.

Now, Messi’s move to the United States only enhances his status as a global icon. What the MLS lacks as a league, Messi makes up for with the American media powers and businesses the star now has access to daily.

I think Miami does not compare to Paris or Barcelona, but that’s a conversation for a different day. You know you are rich when the things that you wear are sold for millions of dollars.

I wonder what my lucky fantasy football t-shirt would land on the open market.
