🏁 Las Vegas GP History & Highlights
The Las Vegas Grand Prix is a new event for Formula 1. It marks the third race in the U.S. in 2023, the most in a single season since 1982. This event is a return for F1 to Las Vegas after more than 40 years away.
The U.S. has held multiple Formula 1 races. The United States Grand Prix has been held at a few circuits across the country; currently, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, holds that event. Prior iterations were held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a street circuit in Phoenix, Watkins Glen, Riverside, and Sebring.
There was also the United States Grand Prix West held from 1976 to 1983 in Long Beach, California. That track now hosts IndyCar races. Other events in the U.S. were the Detroit Grand Prix (1982-1988) and the Dallas Grand Prix (1984).
In 1981 and 1982, Formula 1 held a race in Las Vegas in the Caesars Palace Hotel parking lot. Even though it was the final round of the championship each year in September or October, the heat was a problem for the cars and drivers alike. Crowds were small, and the repetitive nature of the circuit made it uncomfortable for competitors. It’s among some of the worst tracks Formula 1 has ever raced on.
In March 2022, Formula 1 organizers announced a return to Las Vegas starting in the 2023 season. The layout is a far cry from the Caesars Palace parking lot. The 3.8-mile (6.1-kilometer) track is nearly twice as long as the last Las Vegas Grand Prix layout and will take drivers down the iconic Las Vegas Strip.
It will also be a night race to quell concerns about the high temperatures during the daytime. The race will be held on Saturday night instead of Sunday.

The Las Vegas Strip Circuit is 3.803 miles long with 17 corners.
Driving down the Las Vegas Strip, drivers will pass Treasure Island, The Mirage, Caesars Palace, the Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Cosmopolitan, and Aria hotels.
The long back straight down the Strip and other straights down Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane will give drivers ample opportunity for overtaking.
The circuit’s seating capacity is estimated to be 100,000.
