The San Sebastian Recreation Club was formed in 1904 and they played in the Copa Del Rey one year later. In 1909, the soccer branch of the club competed in the Copa Del Rey as Club Ciclista de San Sebastián. With a 3-1 win in the final, they won the first major honor in the Real Sociedad stats.
After the king gave the club patronage in 1910, they became known as Real Sociedad de Fútbol. A founding member of La Liga in 1929, the Basque club finished in fourth place. After the Spanish Civil War, the club went through a period of recurring promotions and relegations. Real Sociedad’s fortunes turned around in the 1980s, though.
In the 1979-80 season, the Txuri-Urdin finished as La Liga runners-up for the first time. They ended the season just one point behind three-time defending champions Real Madrid. Real Sociedad denied Real Madrid a fifth consecutive title by winning La Liga for the first time in 1982. Real Sociedad made the semifinals of the 1982-83 European Cup and lost to eventual champions, Hamburg. In the 1987 Copa Del Rey, they defeated their Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao in the semifinals and beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 in penalties in the final. The following season, the Txuri-Urdin fell just short in the league and the Copa Del Rey as runners-up in both.
