Team History
The Alabama A&M Bulldogs spent most of their early history competing in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs were good in the mid-70s. They were crowned as regular season SIAC champions and won the SIAC championship Tournament in 1975 and 1976.
They won the SIAC regular season championship and SIAC Tournament four years straight from 1986-1989. They then went on to win the SIAC in 1993, 1995, and 1996. Additionally, they appeared in the Division II Tournament in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997. They made it to the second round five times and to the Elite Eight four times. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they’ve never made it past the Elite Eight round of the tournament.
First Winning Season in the SWAC
After the 1997-1998 season, the Bulldogs moved to the Southwestern Athletic Conference under head coach Vann Pettaway. Pettaway and the Bulldogs finished with their first winning season in the SWAC in 1999-2000. They were led by guard Terrance Vanlier, who averaged nearly 18 points and seven rebounds. They nearly won the SWAC regular season championship but lost it by one game to Alcorn State.
The 2004-2005 season was historical for the Bulldogs. It was their first time winning the SWAC. They won both the regular season championship and the conference tournament championship. They were led by Bulldogs’ all-time leading scorer Obie Trotter. He averaged 15 points per game, four rebounds per game and four assists per game. It was also the Bulldogs first and only time making the Division I NCAA Tournament.
Pettaway never led the Bulldogs to another winning season during his remaining six seasons at the helm. He finished his career at Alabama A&M with a 162-179 overall record.
Willie Hayes coached the Bulldogs from 2011-2017. The Bulldogs never finished with a winning record under Hayes. In his final season at the helm, the Bulldogs had one of their worst seasons in program history after finishing with a 2-27 overall record.
Dylan Howard coached the Bulldogs from 2018-2022. He led the Bulldogs to a 31-76 overall record.
Otis Hughley Jr. is in his first season as the Bulldogs’ head coach. The Bulldogs currently have a 4-9 overall record.
