Overview of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Standings

Last-Season Standings

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane basketball team had an up-and-down season in 2021-2022. Despite some early struggles, the team managed to finish with a respectable 16-14 overall record and a 9-9 record in conference play. However, they fell just short of earning an NCAA Tournament bid, and instead settled for a spot in the NIT.

The Golden Hurricane had some impressive wins throughout the season, including a road victory over the Houston Cougars, who were ranked No. 12 in the country at the time. They also defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats, who were a top contender in the American Athletic Conference.

One of the keys to Tulsa’s success was the play of senior guard Brandon Rachal, who led the team in scoring with an average of 15.5 points per game. Rachal was also a force on the boards, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-AAC First Team for his efforts.

Another standout for the Golden Hurricane was sophomore guard Keyshawn Embery-Simpson, who averaged 12.7 points per game and was second on the team in assists with 2.7 per game. Embery-Simpson was a consistent scorer throughout the season and was named to the All-AAC Second Team.

Despite the contributions of Rachal and Embery-Simpson, the Golden Hurricane struggled with consistency at times. They suffered some disappointing losses, including a defeat to the Tulane Green Wave, who finished with a losing record in conference play.

In the end, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane finished tied for fifth in the American Athletic Conference standings. While they fell short of their goal of making the NCAA Tournament, they can still be proud of their season and the progress they made under head coach Frank Haith.

Overall, the 2021-2022 season was a solid one for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane basketball team. They had some impressive wins, showcased some talented players, and made progress throughout the year. As they look ahead to next season, they will aim to build on their success and compete for a conference championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Basketball History

Overall

For most of its existence, Tulsa’s basketball program has not been that prominent. Bettors can often find the Golden Hurricane as underdogs on the NCAAB odds. On the point spread, Tulsa tends to be average and it’s ranked squarely in the middle of the AAC in terms of cover rate.

This program came to be in 1907 as an independent school. It joined the MVC in 1935 and finally gained attention under Clarence Iba in the 1950s. Under the head coach, Tulsa qualified for the NIT in 1953 and then made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 1955. The team also went all the way to the Sweet Sixteen.
However, these years would be few and far in between. Tulsa made the NIT in 1967 and 1969 but every other season saw no postseason basketball. But the school’s fortunes would pivot in 1980 when Nolan Richardson arrived as the new coach. Under his guidance, the Golden Hurricane ascended.

Tulsa won their conference repeatedly and consistently qualified for March Madness. Players like Paul Pressey and Steve Harris would also go on to have lengthy NBA careers. The latter led the Golden Hurricane’s team stats in scoring until Shea Seals broke his records a decade later.

Even with Richardson’s departure in 1985, the Golden Hurricane remained a competitive team. Tubby Smith took over in 1991 and in his four seasons in Tulsa led the team to consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearances.

The aforementioned Seals was the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes team stats leader.
In the late 1990s, Bill Self would guide Tulsa to its best result: a 32-5 regular season record (12-2 conference) and an appearance in the Regional Final (Elite Eight) of the NCAA Tournament. But as has been the case with Tulsa, Self did not stick around and left this same year.

The Golden Hurricane continued to compete admirably though it never went past the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Now, Frank Haith is in charge of the team as of the 2022-23 season. Tulsa has struggled to qualify for the tournament.
