AC Milan and Newcastle United were unlucky to be drawn into the Champions League group of death. Along with those two sides, PSG and Borussia Dortmund will be competing for a place in the last 16 of the UCL. In the opening match of the group, Newcastle head to Milan as Sandro Tonali returns to the San Siro for the first time. The midfielder didn’t play in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Brentford on Saturday but should be good to go on Tuesday. This is the first-ever match between AC Milan and Newcastle on the UCL schedule. It’s also the first time Newcastle are taking on Italian opposition in the Champions League since 2002-03. AC Milan Fall in Derby Match
AC Milan fell 5-1 in the Derby della Madonnina vs. Inter Milan on Saturday. The Rossoneri fell behind 1-0 in the fifth minute to a Henrikh Mkhitaryan goal. Milan were behind 2-0 at halftime, and Rafael Leao managed to get a goal back after halftime. Still, Inter scored three unanswered goals to get their fifth straight win over AC Milan. It was the Rossoneri’s first loss of the Serie A season.
Stefano Pioli’s Milan reached the semifinals of the Champions League last season, where they also lost to Inter. Still, the Rossoneri managed to knock out Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli en route to a first semifinals appearance since 2007. Before Saturday’s loss, Milan had a strong start to the season, scoring eight goals in their first three matches.
Despite being held to one goal on Saturday, the frontline of Leao, Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic has been excellent this season. Giroud has scored four goals in four Serie A games and is an experienced veteran of Champions League football. Last season, Giroud scored five goals in 12 UCL games. He was tied for sixth in the Champions League stats last season, and he and Pulisic won the UCL with Chelsea in 2021.
Milan have a couple of injuries heading into Tuesday’s match. Center back Pierre Kalulu is dealing with a muscle injury. Meanwhile, midfielder Ismael Bennacer hasn’t made an appearance this season yet.
Newcastle Return to Champions League
Newcastle United took a three-game losing streak into Premier League Matchday 5. Eddie Howe’s side had a brutal schedule to open the season, with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Brighton and Brentford in their first five matches. After losses vs. City, Liverpool and Brighton, Newcastle defeated Brentford 1-0 on Saturday. After Callum Wilson had a goal disallowed by VAR, he converted a penalty.
The win was the Magpies’ first clean sheet of the season, and it came at a good time. They’re heading into their first Champions League campaign since 2003-04. Newcastle were one of the surprises of the EPL season in 2022-23 as they finished ahead of Liverpool in fourth place.
Flush with cash, Newcastle added Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes to the side to add talent and depth. Tonali has had a bright start to his Newcastle career and is one of the only players in the side with Champions League experience. He forms a midfield trio with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes which should be able to compete with Europe’s best sides.
