Yes, MTV Still Has An Awards Show

With betting on entertainment gaining in popularity, we dig into the Video Music Awards

In case you didn’t know, the M in MTV used to stand for music. We can hear the old-school MTV watchers say what they’ve said since 2001 when the former music channel played Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” to mark the end of the music video era after 20 years; how can you have a MTV Awards show when they don’t play videos anymore?

They can, and they’ve been doing it for a long time. The run gave many bands a platform and a path to superstardom. Perhaps no other genre of music benefited from the channel more than hard rock fans. The minute the first chord of Def Leppard’s “Photograph” splashed across our televisions, rock music was changed forever. Video and audio music became an American institution, while the channel decided an awards show was the next step to promoting the bands they helped build.

In 1984 the first show aired from Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Although videos have been regulated to YouTube nowadays, the awards show continues, with the best part being we can bet on it. The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards will be given out on September 12th, when it airs live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Let’s review a few VMA odds and see if we can pound out some winners while reminiscing about what was.

Best New Artist Odds

Ice Spice is a -110 favorite to take home this award after releasing ‘Like…?’ in late January. The EP produced a hit single, “Princess Diana” featuring Nicki Minaj, after reaching #4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in April. In addition, a song not on the record became her biggest when “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2″ with Pink Pantheress reached No. 3. She also scored a hit when teaming with Minaj and Aqua to produce their version of “Barbie World” on the Barbie soundtrack. Peso Pluma (+175) and Pink Pantheress (+300) have the next-best odds to win, but this MTV Video Music Award is Ice Spice’s for the taking.

Best Pop Video Odds

Make no mistake; awards shows are there to make money. There is no way Taylor Swift doesn’t walk away with her 15th MTV Video Music award for her song “Anti-Hero.” She is the world’s biggest superstar, and MTV needs the viewers, with ratings plummeting. Swift is -150 to win, with Miley Cyrus (+225) for “Flowers” and Olivia Rodrigo (+400) for “Vampire.” “Anti-Hero” was released in October of 2022 off her record “Midnights.” The single has won ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Lyrics’ at the iHeartRadio Music awards.

Artist Of The Year Odds

We think the MTV Music Video Awards will be a massive night for the “Swifties” with ‘Artist of the Year’ likely going to the 33-year-old. With ‘The Eras Tour’ selling out in every city, the former country star even found time to appear in her 14th film (Amsterdam). Only three other female artists (Madonna, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey) have sold more records than Swift (200 million plus). Only Madonna has topped the 300 million mark. Behind Swift are Nicki Minaj (Even), and Beyonce (+700). Some of us want to give out Minaj, but common sense says no one deserves or defines ‘Artist of the Year’ more than Swift. If Swift doesn’t win, it’s because someone decided that Swift can’t win every MTV Video Music award.

Song Of The Year Odds

We never want to lay -200 with any wager, but Taylor Swift winning this award for “Anti-Hero” is a done deal. “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus is the second choice (+400), followed by “Kill Bill” by SZA.

With everything we have, Cyrus should win this award for the lead single off her latest record, Endless Summer Vacation, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. The single hit No. 1 on 61 different charts across the world. With all that being said, Swift will take home another award.

Video Of The Year Odds

We can’t take it anymore; we’re giving this award to Miley Cyrus (+150) for “Flowers,” even if Swift is a -125 favorite. This is the biggest hit in Cyrus’ career and should be recognized at some point. It broke the record for the most streamed song on Spotify in its first and second weeks and surpassed one million streams just 12 days after its release, the fastest in the company’s history. Our last MTV Video Music Award prediction goes to Cyrus, who should have more awards if there was some justice. That does for our VMA predictions, have fun with all your wagers.
