EPL: Arsenal vs. Liverpool Betting Odds

Premier League Leaders Take on Struggling Liverpool

Gunners Perfect at Home So Far

Not many would have believed that Arsenal would be leading the Premier League through eight games. Perhaps even fewer would have thought Liverpool would be in ninth place. That is where things currently stand as both teams prepare to meet in London on Sunday. Arsenal are in stellar form and playing with reckless abandon but Liverpool have been their achilles heel recently. Let’s see if Arsenal are favored to break the trend as we review the Arsenal vs. Liverpool betting odds and preview the match.

  • Jul 2020: Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool

Liverpool and Arsenal met four times last season in all competitions. The combined score? Liverpool eight, Arsenal zero. The Reds defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the EFL Cup semifinals, on aggregate. The Gunners, down to ten men, defied the Arsenal vs. Liverpool betting odds and managed a gutsy draw at Anfield. However, Arsenal fell 2-0 at home in the second leg and Liverpool later went on to win the EFL Cup. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool also won both Premier League matches last season. The Reds have taken all three points in each of the last four EPL meetings.

Arsenal Topping the Table

  • Recent Form (All Competitions): W,W,W,W,L
  • EPL Record: 7-1, 1st
  • Injuries and Suspensions: M Emile Smith Rowe (Out), M Mohamed Elneny (Out)

Arsenal have been exceptional lately and it’s been a very good week for them. They first dominated their biggest rivals Tottenham en route to a North London Derby victory last Saturday. Thomas Partey finally scored one from outside of the box and what a stunner it was. Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka were also on the scoresheet. Then, Arsenal comfortably defeated Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday. The latter win was their first home clean sheet of the season and they’ll certainly hope to keep one on Sunday.

Gabriel Jesus has raised the level of the Gunners and had a magnificent assist on Thursday. The Brazilian has scored five goals since joining from Manchester City in the Summer and he’s the number nine Arsenal sorely lacked last season. This is also a much deeper Arsenal team than in recent seasons. Solid players like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kieran Tierney and Fabio Vieira are finding it difficult to break into the starting XI.

Arsenal’s EPL schedule 2022 is manageable if they can get through this match unscathed. The only other team from last season’s top four they face before the World Cup break is Chelsea, in November. The Gunners have looked like Premier League contenders, after missing out on the top four last season. If they’re still on top of the table by the start of 2023, they’ll be taken even more seriously as such.

Liverpool Out of Character

  • Recent Form: W,D,W,L,D
  • EPL Record: 2-1-4, 9th
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D Andy Robertson (Day-to-Day), M Naby Keita (Out), M Curtis Jones (Out), M Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Out)

Liverpool got a big Champions League win on Tuesday as they defeated Rangers, 2-0. Trent Alexander-Arnold opened up the scoring on a thumping free kick and Mo Salah added a penalty later. The win followed a 3-3 draw vs. Brighton at the weekend, in which Liverpool managed to come back from 2-0 down. The Reds haven’t looked like themselves this season, though, and are ninth in the Premier League standings.

The win followed a 3-3 draw vs. Brighton at the weekend, in which Liverpool managed to come back from 2-0 down.

The relentless pressing that they’ve been known for hasn’t been as intense this season. Virgil van Dijk has looked like a shell of himself and even Mo Salah has struggled a bit. Liverpool are missing Sadio Mane, which isn’t to take away anything from Luis Diaz. Still, Diogo Jota has loved this fixture since joining Liverpool. The Portuguese forward has seven goals vs. the Gunners since 2020.

Even though they haven’t been great, Liverpool only have one loss in the Premier League this season. That was away at Manchester United, which happens to be Arsenal’s only loss as well. The Reds are still winless in the EPL this season away from Anfield, drawing at both Everton and Fulham. These are fixtures Liverpool would have been expected to win comfortably in recent years. So, despite their recent history vs. Arsenal, this isn’t necessarily the same Liverpool that won four in four last year.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool Odds & Preview

Arsenal haven’t beaten Liverpool in front of their home fans since 2015, as their 2-1 win over Liverpool at the Emirates in 2020 was played behind closed doors. One could argue this is the strongest Arsenal team since 2015. Certainly, their fans haven’t been this excited about the team for a long while. So, it will be a hostile atmosphere for Liverpool to play in. As such, the Arsenal vs. Liverpool betting odds price the Gunners as slight favorites.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal sit at +155 odds, with Liverpool just behind them, at +160. Including all competitions, two of the last six meetings have finished in 90-minute draws. A draw may be appealing to a lot of punters, at +280 odds. Liverpool have already drawn four of their first seven EPL matches.

Since both teams like to take the game to their opponents, this has the making of a back and forth match. Tottenham were content to put every man behind the ball last Saturday in the North London Derby but that’s not Liverpool’s M.O. The game may be stretched at times, which could mean a lot of goalscoring opportunities. The over/under goals total stands at three, with both sides priced at -110. Arsenal failed to score vs. Liverpool last season but rarely have the Reds looked this vulnerable on defense under Jurgen Klopp.
