The 2022-23 UEFA Europa League concluded last Wednesday as Sevilla dramatically defeated AS Roma in penalties. Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri led the champions in scoring four goals for the Europa League season. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Union Saint-Gilloise’s Victor Boniface were the joint-top scorers in the competition this season. The forwards found the net on six occasions, even though neither of their teams advanced past the quarterfinals. Let’s look back at the top UEFA Europa League scorers of the season in the European tournaments.

Joint-Leaders

The two joint-top UEFA Europa League scorers were Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Union Saint-Gilloise’s Victor Boniface. Even though he missed United’s quarterfinal loss to Sevilla, Rashford still found the net six times in the Europa League.

Rashford was United’s top scorer this season in all competitions, too. The England international reached the 30-goal mark in a season for the first time in his career.

Meanwhile, Boniface emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout stars with his timely goals. In their first-ever appearance in the group stage, Belgian club USG finished first in the Group D Europa League standings.

Boniface scored three goals in the group stage and three in the knockouts as USG also reached the quarters. The Nigerian forward figures to be in high demand from clubs abroad this Summer.

Gimenez and Dybala Carry Teams

Santiago Gimenez switched to Feyenoord from Mexico’s’ Cruz Azul last Summer and hit the ground running. In his first-ever Europa League match, he scored twice in a 4-2 loss to Lazio.

Gimenez also scored the winner in the reverse fixture vs. the Italian side. Overall, he finished with five goals in just four starts in the Europa League. He tallied 1.04 goals per 90 minutes, the best per-minute ratio in the competition. Feyenoord reached the quarterfinals, facing Paulo Dybala and AS Roma on their Europa League schedule.

Dybala also joined Roma last Summer and immediately made an impact. He was the only Roma player to score more than ten goals this season; five came in the Europa League.

The Argentine missed more than ten matches due to injury this season, including four Europa League games. Still, he was a crucial cog in Jose Mourinho’s Giallorossi side that nearly won the competition. Due to fitness concerns, Dybala was limited to sixty minutes in the final vs. Sevilla, and Roma fell to Sevilla in penalties.

The Top-Five

Six players tied for fifth place in the top UEFA Europa League scorers list. Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri was one of them, and all four goals came in the knockout stage.

En-Nesyri scored two crucial ones in a 3-0 win vs. Manchester United in the second leg of the quarterfinals. Angel Di Maria also scored four goals for Juventus, who reached the semifinals, and the Argentine had one of the goals of the tournament. He put in an outrageous curler in a 3-0 win over Nantes that he scored a hat trick in.

Vitinha scored a hat trick for Braga in the group stage vs. Union Saint-Gilloise. He finished with four goals in the group stage before completing a move to Marseille.

Like Di Maria and Vitinha, Kevin Volland was the only other player to score a hat trick in the UEL this season. However, teammate Wissam Ben Yedder outscored him in the Europa League.

Roma has another entry in the top-five scorers, as captain Lorenzo Pellegrini found the net four times. In their first Europa League appearance in over 20 years, Robin Knoche also scored four goals for Union Berlin. Knoche is notably the only defender in the top five.
