CONCACAF Gold Cup: Mexico vs Qatar Odds

Mexico Become First Team to Clinch Knockout Berth

Qatar in Need of a Win

With Mexico’s 3-1 win over Haiti, El Tri became the first team to book their place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal. They’ll likely finish in first place in their group, but they can remove all doubt with a win over Qatar on Sunday. Invited guests Qatar have just one point through two matches and need a win to keep their knockout stage hopes alive. We’ll preview the Mexico vs Qatar odds from an important Group B match.

CONCACAF Gold Cup

Mexico vs Qatar

Date, time:
Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, USA

Head-to-Head

This match on the Gold Cup games schedule is the first-ever competitive match between Mexico vs. Qatar. Both teams reached the semifinal stage of the 2021 Gold Cup and won continental championships in 2019. Mexico won the 2019 Gold Cup, and Qatar are the most recent AFC Asian Cup champions.

Mexico Regaining Form

    • Last Match: 3-1 W vs. Haiti
    • Standings: 2-0, 1st Group B

Following CONCACAF Nations League disappointment, Mexico opened up their Gold Cup with a resounding 4-0 win over Honduras. In their next match vs. Haiti, Mexico created many chances but couldn’t find a first-half breakthrough. Finally, El Tri scored in the 48th minute as Henry Martin headed home. With Mexico still piling on the pressure, they forced Haiti into an own goal just minutes later.

Haiti hung around and managed a 78th-minute consolation goal from a set piece. Then, Mexico substitute striker Santiago Gimenez took his opportunity and scored to put the game out of reach. In the 3-1 win, Mexico outshot Haiti 32-6. El Tri are starting to look like themselves again, and they’ve clinched yet another berth in the knockout stage. They’ve made it to at least the semifinal in each of the last eight editions of the tournament.

Now, the Mexico vs Qatar odds price El Tri as favorites for this match in Charlotte. Interim head coach Jaime Lozano is going for a third win in as many matches. It’s certainly a good sign that they’ve scored seven goals in their first two matches, as their offense is firing on all cylinders. Uriel Antuna registered two assists in the match vs. Haiti, creating chaos on the right-hand side.

Qatar Blow Another Lead

  • Last Match: 1-1 D vs. Honduras
  • Standings: 0-1-1, 3rd Group B

Qatar scored first in their first two CONCACAF Gold Cup matches. Still, the invited guests from the AFC are just in third place in the Group B Gold Cup standings 2023. In their opener, Qatar scored first vs. Haiti but conceded a penalty and a stoppage-time goal to lose 2-1. Looking to bounce back vs. Honduras, Qatar scored within seven minutes on a Tameem Al-Abdullah header.

Carlos Queiroz’s team tried to protect their lead, and Honduras put the pressure on throughout the match. Honduras dominated possession and created the better chances in the match but couldn’t seem to break Qatar completely down. Finally, Honduras scored right at the death as Alberth Elis scooped an acrobatic shot over Qatar keeper Meshaal Barsham.

Qatar could only settle for a draw and now need a win just to keep their knockout stage hopes alive. They come in with a better goal difference than last-placed Honduras but need Haiti to either lose or draw vs. Honduras to have a shot at advancing. Yousuf Abdurisag was suspended for Qatar’s final match as he was part of a scuffle after the final whistle vs. Honduras.

Match Analysis and Odds

The Mexico vs Qatar odds price El Tri at -290 odds to win the match. For their roles in brawls in the match vs. the USA in the CONCACAF Nations League, Mexico’s Cesar Montes and Gerardo Arteaga are still suspended. Mexico also enter the match as 1.5-goal favorites and show -110 ATS odds.

Qatar, in their first match vs. Mexico, are big +750 underdogs. The midfield battle will be important in this one and it’s doubtful whether Qatar have the personnel to compete. Qatar +1.5 does display -120 odds, though. A draw would clinch the group for Mexico and send Qatar home, and one is priced at +475 odds.

Meanwhile, goals are expected in this match as Mexico have averaged 3.5 goals through their first two matches. Qatar have also scored in both of their games, and over three goals sit at -135 odds here.
