CONMEBOL WCQ: Peru vs Brazil Odds

Neymar Becomes Brazil’s All-Time Leading Scorer

Brazil Blow Away Bolivia in WCQ Opener

Rodrygo and Neymar both scored twice as Brazil destroyed Bolivia 5-1 in their 2024 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying opener. In the process, Neymar overtook the legendary Pele to become Brazil’s all-time leading scorer. Now, the Seleção head to Lima to take on Peru in their second World Cup qualifier. Peru drew 0-0 at Paraguay in their first match and will almost have a starting XI worth of players out for this one. With La Blanquirroja shorthanded, we’ll preview the Peru vs Brazil odds.

CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers

Peru vs Brazil

Date & Time:
Location: Estadio Nacional del Peru, Lima, Peru

Head-to-Head:

Brazil has dominated this fixture for decades and Peru’s last home win vs. Brazil was all the way back in 1953. The Seleção have won each of their last four matches vs. Peru and ten of the last 12. In the 2022 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying, Brazil picked up 4-2 and 2-0 wins vs. Peru. Neymar scored a hat trick in the match in Peru and added another goal in Recife.

Peru Survives in Paraguay

    • Last Match: 0-0 D at Paraguay
    • Next Match: Oct. 12 at Chile
    • Key Injuries/Suspensions: D Alexander Callens (Questionable), D Luis Advincula (Suspended), D Anderson Santamaria (Out), M Christofer Gonzales (Out), M Pedro Aquino (Out), M Christian Cueva (Out), M Edison Flores (Out), F Bryan Reyna (Out), F Gianluca Lapadula (Out)

Peru had to deal with an onslaught of attacks in Paraguay on Thursday. Things became even more complicated when right-back Luis Advincula received a second yellow card in the 45th minute and Peru went down to ten men. Peru keeper Pedro Gallese had to come up big on a number of occasions and he successfully kept Paraguay out of the back of his net. Granted, he did receive some help from the posts and crossbar.

Now, Advincula is out and suspended for Peru’s match vs. Brazil on Tuesday. Plus, almost a full starting XI of Peruvian players are out for this pair of CONMEBOL qualifiers. That includes Gianluca Lapadula, who has scored some important goals for La Blanquirroja in recent times. They do have all-time leading scorer Paolo Guerrero to play up top, though.

Guerrero nearly fired home an outrageous long shot vs. Paraguay but it hit the crossbar. Officially, Peru didn’t manage a single shot on target vs. Paraguay and things won’t be any easier vs. Brazil. Here, the Peru vs Brazil odds price the hosts as +770 underdogs.

Diniz Wins First Match in Charge of Brazil

    • Last Match: 5-1 W vs. Bolivia
    • Next Match: Oct. 12 vs. Venezuela
    • Key Injuries/Suspensions: D Eder Militao (Out), F Vinicius Junior (Out), F Antony (Legal Issues)

Until Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti takes charge of Brazil this Summer, Fernando Diniz will be Brazil’s interim coach. His tenure got off to a fine start as Brazil defeated Bolivia 5-1 on Friday. Neymar shot a weak penalty that the Bolivian keeper saved in the early goings but Rodrygo scored to put the Seleção up 1-0 at the half.

Raphinha scored within three minutes of the start of the second half before Rodrygo added a second. Neymar scored twice and his first goal was quite an emotional one. His teammates were visibly excited for him as he became Brazil’s all-time leading scorer. Brazil will be frustrated they conceded but are on top of the CONMEBOL standings on goal difference, for now.

Brazil’s front three is incredibly exciting to watch and a nightmare for any defense. Even though usual left winger Vinicius Junior is out, Rodrygo, Raphinha, and Neymar are an excellent trio and all got on the scoresheet on Friday. With so many Peruvians out, there’s absolutely no excuse for Brazil not to go on and win here.

Match Analysis and Odds

Brazil have dominated this fixture for decades, especially when they play in Peru. The Peru vs Brazil odds price the visitors as -285 favorites for Tuesday’s match. It’ll be exceedingly difficult for Peru to keep another clean sheet here. Creating offense vs. Brazil will be another uphill battle for the hosts.

Peru +1, +1.5 displays +105 odds but I’d certainly be wary of taking a shorthanded Peru team in any capacity for this match. La Blanquirroja is also +770 underdogs as a draw is priced at +410 odds. Brazil -1, -1.5 at -135 odds certainly isn’t the worst bet on the odds board for Tuesday’s match.

Over 2.5 goals come in at -120 odds and Brazil certainly have enough firepower to reach three goals on their own. Peru’s Pedro Gallese is a standout in goal but he figures to have his hands completely full once again on Tuesday.
