âš½Netherlands vs USA: Game Recapâš½
Results: Netherlands 3-1 USA
The Netherlands are the first team to the quarter-finals and ran their unbeaten streak in World Cup matches to 11 with Saturday’s 3-1 win over the United States. The Dutch haven’t lost in their last 19 matches in all competitions and haven’t dropped a World Cup match since losing the 2010 final in extra time.
The first chance of the match went to the U.S. and came in the third minute, arriving from Tyler Adams, one Christian Pulisic would like to have again. It initially seemed he was offside, but he was kept on across the pitch and couldn’t get a left-footed shot by Dutch keeper Andries Noppert. The regret of missing was reaffirmed seven minutes later.
In the 10th minute, Memphis Depay was on the end of the first goal that built quickly from the midfield after an extended sequence, with Cody Gakpo finding Denzel Dumfries on the right followed by a quick ball to the top of the box and the one-time finish.
Daggers rarely appear in the first half, especially at a tournament well-known for slow burns. Still, it came with the Netherlands’ second goal just before the interval, with Dumfries finding Blind streaking into the box for another first-time finish. This time, for the U.S., it was Sergiño Dest trailing his mark. The assists were the first two chances created at the tournament by Dumfries.
The hope of a comeback was sparked in the 76th minute with one of the weirder touches resulting in a goal you’ll see off the foot of Haji Wright on an assist from Pulisic. However, the hope was gone by the 81st minute when Blind returned the favor to Dumfries, who blasted it for a first-time finish.

Netherlands Put 18-Match Unbeaten Streak on the Line
The Netherlands, three-time World Cup finalists, take on the USA in the first round of 16 match of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, on Saturday. While the Netherlands managed to easily win Group A, things weren’t so simple for the USA. It took a gritty 1-0 win over Iran for the USA to finish second in Group B. Both soccer teams are making their first knockout stage appearances since 2014. With a quarterfinals berth and Netherlands’ 18-match unbeaten streak on the line, let’s take a look at the Netherlands vs USA odds.

Netherlands: Strong Knockout Round Streak Continues
Standings: 2-0 W vs. Qatar
Injuries and Suspensions: None Reported
The Netherlands cruised to a 2-0 victory over Qatar to finish first in the Group A FIFA World Cup Standings. Cody Gakpo, one of the breakout stars of the tournament, opened up the scoring in the 26th minute on a left footed strike. The PSV forward has scored in each of the Oranje’s matches and is going to be a wanted man in the Winter transfer market. Frenkie de Jong scored on a rebound in the second half and Qatar never looked threatening enough to be able to mount a comeback.
The Oranje finished the group stage with two wins and a draw and just one goal conceded. Some have criticized the style of play under Louis van Gaal for being drab but it is hard to argue with the results. Plus, forward Memphis Depay was fit enough to make his first start of the tournament vs. Qatar. The Netherlands’ second-all time leading scorer is set to play a big part on Saturday.
Incredibly, the Netherlands have never missed out on a round of 16 berth when qualifying for the World Cup during the group stage era. In their last two World Cup appearances, in 2010 and 2014 they finished in second and third, respectively. This group doesn’t appear to have the same level of attacking talent of those teams on paper. However, they’ve been in excellent form this year and haven’t lost since last June. They don’t appear to have any injuries coming into the match and it’ll be difficult for the USA to break down a defense with Virgil van Dijk as the lynchpin.
United States: Survive and Advance
Standings: 1-0 W vs. Iran
Injuries and Suspensions: M Weston McKennie (Probable), F Christian Pulisic (Day-to-Day), F Josh Sargent (Doubtful)
Pulisic put his body on the line on his goal and got kneed in the stomach by Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand in the process. The Chelsea winger came off at halftime with a pelvic contusion but USA’s talisman should be ready to go on Saturday. Forward Josh Sargent, who put in a shift and a half on Tuesday, also came off with a nasty looking leg injury. He’s doubtful for Saturday while midfielder Weston McKennie is probable.
The USA also took on England and Wales on their Group B FIFA Schedule. Both of those matches ended in draws but Gregg Berhalter’s side was disappointed not to take advantage of a sluggish England in their second match. This is one of the youngest teams in the tournament and Tyler Adams is the youngest captain, at age 23. Adams has been incredible during the course of the tournament and the pressure hasn’t yet gotten to this young USA team.
Match Analysis and Odds:
The Netherlands vs USA odds board lists the Netherlands as ½-goal favorites. They sit at both -110 ATS and moneyline odds and have won four of their last round of 16 matches. The US, on the other hand, have lost three of their last four round of 16 games. They show a +130 price to cover the spread, though, and are 2-1-0 ATS so far.
Keep an eye on Pulisic’s status for the match as he’s been their most dangerous attacking player. A draw also shows +240 odds
Wins have been hard to come by for the US in the World Cup. The Stars and Stripes have won just three of their last 15 matches and come in at +350 odds to win this one. Keep an eye on Pulisic’s status for the match as he’s been their most dangerous attacking player. A draw also shows +240 odds.
Both teams have defended quite well at the tournament and conceded just two combined goals. As a result, under 2½ goals for the match sits at -160 odds. Neither time has been inspiring offensively either. The US have struggled to put away their chances and the Netherlands haven’t threatened much outside of Gakpo. It was impressive that the US went toe-to-toe with England’s midfield so don’t be surprised if they can hang with the Netherlands in this one.
