Atleti Grab Big Win on Wednesday

Atletico Madrid took a huge step toward the Champions League Semifinal by defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Wednesday. Atleti still has to close it out during next week’s second leg in Germany. Before then, Diego Simeone’s side take on third-placed Girona on Saturday in a La Liga match. A few more wins may seal a historic first UCL berth for Girona and they could dent Atleti’s hopes of making the competition in progress. With Atletico Madrid just two points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic Club, we’ll take a look at the Atletico Madrid vs Girona odds.

Atletico Madrid vs Girona Head-to-Head:

The Atletico Madrid vs Girona odds listed Girona as +150 favorites for January’s La Liga meeting in Catalonia. Girona ended up grabbing their first-ever win over Atletico in a 4-3 thriller. Alvaro Morata’s hat trick was not enough to get a point for Atletico as Ivan Martin scored the winner for Girona in stoppage time. Griezmann Shines for Atletico Midweek

Atletico Madrid’s press in the first half vs. Borussia Dortmund was relentless. Just a few minutes into the match, Rodrigo De Paul intercepted a bad pass by Dortmund fullback Ian Maatsen and was clear through on goal. He managed to finish past Gregor Kobel, who put Maatsen into trouble in the first place with an ill-advised pass. Atleti’s second goal came on another defensive mistake by Dortmund. After a mixup between Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck, Antoine Griezmann played an excellent scoop pass to Samuel Lino, who doubled Atleti’s lead.

Simeone’s men were outplayed in the second half and didn’t have the same intensity. Sebastien Haller got a goal back for Dortmund, and they hit the woodwork on two more occasions. Still, Atletico have won five UCL home games in a row. Griezmann was excellent on Wednesday, as he created six chances in the match.

Atletico Madrid have won three of their last four games at the Metropolitano by a 2-1 scoreline. They have also gone 13-1-1 in their home La Liga fixtures this season but their last home league match finished in a 3-0 loss to Barcelona. Midfielder Pablos Barrios is suspended for this match, while Memphis Depay is injured. Defender Mario Hermoso is also listed as a doubt.

More Late Game Heroics for Girona

Girona’s recent La Liga scores have been somewhat predictable. They’ve won their last three games at home but have also dropped their last four on the road. They have scored just two goals away from home on their road losing streak. On the last day of March, Girona thankfully had a home match vs. Real Betis and it took some late-game heroics to grab a win. Artem Dovbyk scored on a penalty to break a seven-game goal drought, but a horrific pass by David Lopez led to Willian Jose’s chipped goal for Betis.

Dovbyk put Girona ahead again but Jose drew Betis level once again. All-time Girona leading scorer Cristhian Stuani then came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner. With the 3-2 result, Girona remained in third place in the Spanish La Liga standings. They are just two points behind second-placed Barcelona and even a top-four finish would mark their best-ever in La Liga.

Even though Dovbyk was on a long goal drought, he’s still joint-leader in La Liga, with 16 goals. Savio has also been one of the better players in the league, with eight goals and seven assists. Midfielder Ivan Martin won’t be available on Saturday, though, as he’s serving a one-game suspension.

Atletico Madrid vs Girona Analysis & Odds

Atletico Madrid has lost two of its last three matches in La Liga and has little room for error in its Champions League pursuit. Athletic Club is hot on its heels, and Los Colchoneros will want to win this match heading into next week’s UCL match at Dortmund. For Girona, this is a chance to complete their first-ever league double over Atletico and get their first win at the Metropolitano.

Currently, the Atletico Madrid vs Girona odds list the hosts as +105 favorites. That corresponds to an implied 46.4 percent chance of victory without the vig. Girona are +240 underdogs and their road form has been atrocious as of late. Girona is 2-3-3 this season vs. fellow top-six opponents, while Atletico is just 2-1-4.

Bettors can take Atletico pk, -0.5 at -125 odds, while Girona pk, +0.5 sits at +105. A draw (+270) would mean Atletico drop out of the top four again if Bilbao defeats Villarreal at home. Even with a loss, Girona would still have a four-point cushion over Atleti in the Champions League race. Over 2.5, 3 goals are priced at -115 odds, but none of Atletico Madrid’s last seven have finished with more than three goals.
