Brewers vs White Sox Preview: Brewers Ready to Add to Chicago’s Misery

Former Cy Young Award Winner Corbin Burnes Set to Pitch in Series Opener for Brewers

Top White Sox Hitter and MVP Candidate Possibly Out for Series

The Milwaukee Brewers have opened up a little breathing room in the National League Central Division race and now hit the road to face the underachieving Chicago White Sox. Naturally, the Brewers vs White Sox preview favors the visiting Brewers.

Milwaukee is one of six National League teams with winning records on the road while among American League teams, only Kansas City and Oakland have fewer home wins than the 25 recorded by the White Sox.

Milwaukee is 13-12 since play resumed following the MLB All-Star Game. That is still much better than the 9-15 mark by the White Sox. Chicago’s 4.76 ERA during that stretch has contributed to those struggles.

When the teams last met in 2021, Milwaukee won two of the three games and outscored the White Sox 14-7.

After finishing with the White Sox, the MLB schedule has the next six games coming against teams with winning records and in first place in their respective divisions. This begins a stretch with eight out of the next 11 games for the White Sox against teams with winning records.

Milwaukee (+3300) is 11th in the odds to win the World Series. The White Sox are well back at +100000 in the championship odds.

Probable Starting Pitchers

  • Friday: Corbin Burnes (Brewers); Michael Kopech (White Sox)
  • Saturday: Brandon Woodruff (Brewers); Jesse Scholtens (White Sox)
  • Sunday: Freddy Peralta (Brewers); Dylan Cease (White Sox)

All Hands On Deck

When the season began, the Milwaukee Brewers expected to be able to throw Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta in multiple series during the season.

While Burnes and Peralta have combined to start 45 games, Woodruff has been limited to three starts. This will be the first time all season that the three of them will start in the same series after they combined to go 36-19 a season ago. Keep that in mind when looking at the Brewers vs White Sox preview.

Tough Season Could Become More Challenging for White Sox

One of the few consistent bright spots for the White Sox during a difficult 2023 season has been slugging outfielder Luis Robert Jr.

Robert leads the White Sox with 112 games played, 74 runs, 116 hits, 30 doubles, 31 home runs, 65 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. However, in Chicago’s last game, he left with a finger injury and he is listed as questionable for the series opener.

With the White Sox having already traded away Jake Burger, that would mean that the players responsible for 56 of the 127 home runs would not be in the lineup if Robert is sidelined. His status will obviously play a role in the Brewers vs White Sox preview.

Who’s Hot

  • Elvis Andrus, Chicago White Sox IF: Andrus is hitting .417 with five doubles, one home run, five runs scored and eight RBIs in his last six games.
  • Joel Payamps, Milwaukee Brewers P: Payamps has allowed one hit and no runs with four strikeouts in five innings in his last five appearances.
  • Bryan Shaw, Chicago White Sox P: Shaw has surrendered three hits and no run with seven strikeouts in five innings during his last four appearances.
  • Brice Turang, Milwaukee Brewers IF: Turang is hitting .407 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .500 in nine games in August.

Who’s Not

  • Mark Canha, Milwaukee Brewers OF: Canha is hitting .176 with two extra-base hits in the nine games since being acquired from the New York Mets.
  • Dylan Cease, Chicago White Sox P: Cease has allowed eight hits, seven runs, and walked 10 batters in seven innings in his last two starts.
  • Zach Remillard, Chicago White Sox IF: Remillard is 2-for-19 with six strikeouts in his last seven games.
  • Bryse Wilson, Milwaukee Brewers P: Wilson has given up 13 hits, five home runs, and eight runs in 9.1 innings in his last six outings.

Brewers vs White Sox Injury Update

First baseman Carlos Santana and rookie outfielder Joey Wiemer are both questionable for the Brewers.

For the White Sox, outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is questionable while catcher Seby Zavala is on the MLB injured list.

Brewers vs White Sox Betting Preview

Just a quick look at the MLB team stats and pitching matchups give the advantage to the visiting Brewers.

The total has gone over in five of Milwaukee’s last seven games while nine of the last 12 games played by the White Sox finished under the total.

Perhaps a visit to meet the White Sox will cure Milwaukee’s recent road woes as the Brewers are 1-5 in their last six games away from home.

Just 23 of the road games played by Milwaukee have finished over the total.

The Brewers are a combined 52-42 when listed by the MLB odds as the favorite compared to a 52-77 mark as underdogs.
