Patrick Sandoval Stats: Will Sandoval Keep The Angels Competitive in 2023?

Sandoval's Better Than His Record

Patrick Sandoval is in his fifth season with the Los Angeles Angels this year. He’s been consistent in his last three seasons, including this year. The left-hander is only 26 years old and has only pitched for the Angels in his career.

Sandoval won’t be a free agent until 2027, although he began his arbitration process last year with the Angels at age 26. He’ll likely go through the arbitration process for three more seasons before getting the luxury of exploring the market for a bigger payday.

He’d be a free agent for the first time at 30 years old. That’s just how the MLB works. Most players don’t get the opportunity to explore free agency until the 28-32 mark in their careers.

If Sandoval continues his progression at the Major League level, he’ll finally earn a big payday somewhere. But for now, he’s just got to stay consistent.

Here’s a look at Patrick Sandoval stats with the Angels.

Is Patrick Sandoval Elite?

Patrick Sandoval has thrown at least 17 starts in his last three MLB seasons. He struggled in his first 15 games with the Angels, through 2019 and 2020, with an ERA of above 5.

But since 2021, Sandoval has kept his ERA below four and had an ERA of 2.91 in 2022, even after throwing 148.2 innings and 27 starts.

This year, Sandoval has kept his ERA down to 3.86 but still has a high WHIP of 1.37 in 109.2 innings pitched.

Sandoval will never be a team’s ace pitcher. But he’s a reliable middle-of-the-rotation pitcher. Plus, he’s a left-hander, and every team usually wants at least one lefty in their rotation to keep other teams off-balanced.

The World Baseball Classic

Patrick Sandoval pitched for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic earlier this year. He went 1-0 in two starts and had a 1.23 ERA with 7.1 innings pitched. He only allowed six hits and one run and struck out three while walking two.

After his two starts in the WBC, expectations were a bit high for Sandoval. But I’d say he’s delivered thus far.

Career Stats

Sandoval hasn’t been in the league for very long. He’s only thrown 76 starts and appeared in 63 games. But in those games, he’s got respectable numbers all-time.

Sandoval is durable and earning more innings every season, dating back to 2021. The left-hander has still allowed many hits and walks over his career. But he can still limit the damage with a high ground ball and low fly ball rate.

Sandoval has gone 16-32 with the Angels throughout his career, despite having an ERA of 3.74. He’s got a respectable ERA and some excellent numbers across the board. This reflects how bad the Angels have been while Sandoval has been on the team.

The Angels also got their MLB predictions wrong at the MLB Trade Deadline. The Angels want to retain Shohei Ohtani, so they bought at the MLB Deadline. They did that, only to lose multiple series’ since.

The Angels are now fourth in the MLB division standings in the AL West, even though those Patrick Sandoval stats have been great.

How Can Sandoval Improve?

Patrick Sandoval is a left-hander pitcher who will typically face right-handed batters. Over the last 30 days, Sandoval has issued 12.7% of walks to righties. That’s ultimately why Sandoval’s WHIP is so high.

The left-hander has earned 26.6% of strikeouts against righties and 50% of grounders over the last month. He’s pitched well enough for the Angels. But if he can keep walks down, he’d go from a middle-of-the-rotation starter to a top starter for the Angels.

Sandoval has thrown at least five innings in eight straight games. But in those eight games, the Angels have only won three. Sandoval isn’t a hard thrower, but he’s limiting teams to a .265 wOBA over the last month and has allowed only 18% of fly balls.

That’s why he’s only allowed nine home runs in 109.2 innings pitched this season.

Sandoval has earned a 29.1% whiff rate against righties over the last month. He’s also earned 13.2% of swinging strikes against righties in that span.

It would be fun to watch Sandoval in the playoffs. He pitched so well under pressure in the World Baseball Classic. However, the Angels will likely miss the playoffs again this year. We won’t see Sandoval get the ball in the postseason for another year. Those MLB stats 2023 for Sandoval have been good. The Angels hope his time in the World Baseball Classic doesn’t fatigue Sandoval toward the end of the season.
