Nathan Eovaldi has returned to form in his first season with the Texas Rangers. Eovaldi has been in the league since 2011, but he’s never finished a season with an ERA below three.
As a 33-year-old, he might finally achieve that one feat.
Eovaldi has an 11-3 record with a 2.69 ERA on the season. He’s also got a 1.01 WHIP and has thrown 19 starts this season.
Unfortunately, Eovaldi is on the 15-day injured list due to a forearm injury. But he’s already pain-free and playing catch from 75 feet. When Eovaldi can come off the injured list, he’ll likely be ready for the Rangers.
Eovaldi is now part of a rotation that improved at the MLB Trade Deadline. The Rangers added Max Scherzer and Jordan Montgomery. Therefore, Eovaldi won’t have all the pressure of being the ace of the staff for the Rangers. He’ll also get to learn from a couple of other fantastic pitchers.

Will Eovaldi’s Numbers Come Back to Life?

He’s never had a season this good. But it’s not like he’s getting lucky. Eovaldi has limited lefties to a .114 ISO and wOBA of .242 and has earned over 52% of grounders. Righties have struck out nearly 26% of the time against Eovaldi while hitting under 18% of line drives.
While Eovaldi is still allowing 49.4% of hard contact, he’s been able to reduce the type of contact. A hard ground ball isn’t going to get the job done. For example, a hard ground ball sometimes develops into a double play. If Eovaldi were giving up hard contact in the air with line drives, it would be a different story.
But right now, he’s earned 24% of whiffs and nearly 12% of swinging strikes while keeping teams to a barrel percentage of 7%.
