Yankees vs Angels Betting Analysis: Injuries Prove Costly for AL Contenders

Aaron Judgeless Yankees Fall to Last Place in AL East

The New York Yankees will head to the West Coast to open a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels, starting Monday. The Yankees are a slight -115 favorite to win the series, with the Angels priced at -105.

Read on as we assess the odds in our Yankees vs Angels betting analysis preview.

Yankees Continue to Fall

After dropping a weekend series to lowly Colorado, the New York Yankees sit in last place in the American League East. Granted, New York is still comfortably over .500 at 50-44. However, its deficit in the Major League Baseball standings is growing.

New York is currently 9.0 games behind first-place Tampa Bay and 2.0 games out of the third and final AL Wild Card spot. Though New York is still better than even money to make the playoffs (-105), the club’s in a precarious position given the expectations in spring training. The Yankees were listed as a +100 favorite to repeat in the division. Now? Those odds have plummeted to +1600.

The Yankees are 4-6 over their last 10 and 5-7 in July, a stretch that coincides with the absence of outfielder Aaron Judge. The reigning AL Most Valuable Player has been out since June 3 with a torn ligament in his right toe. He’s been sorely missed. Judge was hitting .291 with 19 homers, 40 RBI, and an MLB-leading 1.078 OPS.

Without Judge, the Yankees’ offensive production has waned. They hit just .208 with a .652 OPS in June per MLB team stats, a significant drop from the previous month (.252, .782) when Judge was in the lineup. Keep that in mind as you assess the odds in our Yankees vs Angels betting analysis.

The Amazing Ohtani

What can’t Shohei Ohtani do? The Los Angels Angels two-way superstar is having an incredible season. In addition to headlining Los Angeles’ rotation, Ohtani remains the Angels’ biggest power source, especially in the absence of outfielder Mike Trout (fractured wrist). Ohtani leads baseball with 34 home runs and a 1.051 OPS and is tied for third with 73 RBI. As such, he’s a near -800 lock to win AL MVP for the second time in three seasons.

Despite Ohtani’s brilliance, the Angels have dropped eight of 10 to fall to 46-48. That’s good for fourth place in the AL West, 9.0 games behind the division-leading Rangers.

Trout, who was hitting .263 with 18 homers and 44 RBI, is expected to be out well into August after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hamate bone. The Angels are just 1-6 in his absence, dropping 6.0 games out of the last wild card spot in the AL. That’s important to remember as part of our Yankees vs Angels betting analysis.

Odds Outlook

The Angels have been one of the least profitable teams for bettors in 2023. Their 43-51 record against the run line is tied for the fifth-worst in MLB. That includes a 19-27 record ATS at home. Conversely, the Yankees are 49-45 ATS, including 25-18 away from Yankee Stadium.

⚾ Game 1 ⚾

Griffin Canning vs Luis Severino
Monday, 9:38 p.m. ET

Canning is 6-4 with a 4.62 ERA. The right-hander allowed two runs over 5.1 innings in a 3-2, 10-inning loss to New York on April 19. He opposes Severino, who has an unsightly 7.38 ERA over nine starts since coming off the injured list. He was tagged for seven runs on 10 hits over 2.2 innings in his last start, a 14-1 loss to Baltimore on July 6.

The Angels are -1.5 (+155) on the run line and a -131 favorite to win outright, with the Yankees priced at +121. The projected total is 9 (-105/-115. Be sure to watch for line movement in this Yankees vs Angels matchup.

⚾ Game 2 ⚾

Patrick Sandoval vs Domingo German
Tuesday, 9:38 p.m. ET

Sandoval is 4-7 with a 4.41 ERA. The southpaw allowed five runs over four innings in a 9-3 loss to the Yankees on April 20. The Yankees will counter with German, who is 5-5 with a 4.32 ERA. German has given up just three runs over his last 19.1 frames. Notably, he tossed a perfect game against Oakland on June 28.

⚾ Game 3 ⚾

TBD vs Carlos Rodon
Wednesday, 7:07 p.m. ET

Rodon is still rounding into form after missing the first three-plus months with a back injury. The two-time All-Star has given up six runs over 10.1 innings in his first two starts as a Yankee. The Angels have yet to name a starter.
