Yankees vs Mets Betting Odds: Pitching Matchups in Subway Series

Yankees Look to Add to Mets' Woes in Upcoming Subway Series at Citi Field

Scherzer, Verlander to Get Ball Against Yankees for Struggling Mets

Neither the New York Yankees nor the New York Mets are heading into the games on Tuesday and Wednesday at Citi Field bursting with confidence and that will factor into the Yankees vs Mets betting odds. The Yankees just lost two of three games to the rival Boston Red Sox, the last-place team in the American League East. The Mets have dropped eight of the last nine games.

The Yankees are still holding down one of the wild-card spots in the American League, thanks in large part to a 17-12 record on the road. The Mets are in fourth place in the National League East Division and three games out of the final playoff spot.

The two games will be missing two of the best power hitters in baseball. Aaron Judge, the reigning American League Most Valuable Player, is out of the Yankees lineup and on the injured list as a result of a toe injury suffered making a catch in the outfield. Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso is out for multiple weeks after injuring his wrist when being hit by a pitch.

When looking at the MLB pitching matchups and odds, Luis Severino and Gerrit Cole will be starting the two games for the Yankees with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander going for the Mets.

The Yankees (+1100) are fifth in the odds to win the World Series with the Mets (+2200) ninth in the championship odds.

In Search of Offense

Over the last six games, the Yankees are batting just .188 with 41 strikeouts. Outfielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa leads the way with a .429 average.

Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Volpe and Josh Donaldson are a combined 4-for-65 with 17 strikeouts and that is not a recipe for success.

Judge hit three home runs in four games against the Mets last season so he will be missed in these two games. Perhaps if he was in the lineup, the Yankees vs Mets betting odds would favor the visiting Yankees.

Six of the last seven games played by the Yankees finished under the total. Keep that in mind when it comes to the MLB predicted scores.

Looking to Pitch In

Wondering why the Mets are just 2-8 in the month of June? A 5.09 team ERA has something to do with it as the Mets have allowed 102 hits in 86.2 innings.

Scherzer has a 4.29 ERA and Verlander a mark of 5.00 in June. Seven of the top relief pitchers have ERAs over 4.00. Without Alonso in the middle of the lineup, the pitching woes makes it challenging to win games. Still, the Mets are favored in Tuesday’s game according to the Yankees vs Mets betting odds.

The total has gone under in six of the last seven home games for the Mets as well as in eight of the last 12 contests.

Who’s Hot

  • Willie Calhoun, New York Yankees OF: Calhoun is 4-for-14 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs in his last four games.
  • Clay Holmes, New York Yankees P: Holmes hasn’t allowed a run in his last six appearances. He has given up two hits and struck out eight in 6.1 innings during that stretch.
  • Starling Marte, New York Mets OF: Marte is 11-for-32 with six runs, two runs and two extra-base hits in his last eight games.
  • Brooks Raley, New York Mets P: Raley has allowed eight hits and one run with 14 strikeouts over 11 innings in his last 13 appearances.

Who’s Not

  • Brett Baty, New York Mets IF: Baty is 0-for-7 with two strikeouts in his two games.
  • Tommy Hunter, New York Mets P: Hunter has surrendered four hits, three home runs and five runs in 2.2 innings in the two games he appeared in during the month of June.
  • Anthony Rizzo, New York Yankees 1B: Rizzo is 0-for-19 with four strikeouts in his last six games.
  • Luis Severino, New York Yankees P: Severino has allowed 15 hits, six home runs and 11 runs over nine innings in his last two starts.

Yankees vs Mets Injury Update

Judge is far from the only Yankee player on the injured list. They are also without outfielders Harrison Bader and Greg Allen, infielder Oswald Peraza and pitchers Carlos Rodon, Frankie Montas, Nestor Cortes and Ian Hamilton.

Outfielder Tim Locastro and pitcher Edwin Uceta are on the injured list for the Mets.

Yankees vs Mets Betting Preview

Other than Cole, the other three probable starting pitchers in the series have had some issues recently and that could result in chances for the hitters to get pitches to hit.

Each of the last three games between the Mets and Yankees finished under the total with the home team winning each of the last five MLB matchups.

The Mets are favored in the opener at -140 and are 24-20 when listed as the favorite this season. The Yankees are 9-11 as the underdog, +125. However, the Yankees have covered in 19 of the 29 road games compared to a 11-16 against the spread for the Mets at home this MLB season.
