Sun vs Mercury Odds: Phoenix Can Get Too Hot For Sun at Home

Underdog Mercury Have Flourished in Phoenix

Public Betting Heavily on Connecticut Despite Trends

The Connecticut Sun should run over the moribund Phoenix Mercury. That’s why bettors have steamed the Sun vs Mercury odds in favor of Connecticut. Its spread has gone from -4 to -7.5 currently. Never mind that Phoenix is 5-1 in its last six home games, as Connecticut has a similar record on the road.

Thomas Continues to Carry the Sun

Alyssa Thomas should be a finalist for the WNBA MVP this season. The forward is racking up triple-doubles and is having a phenomenal year. Her 10.1 rebounds and 8.2 assists are career bests. She destroyed Minnesota to the tune of 21 points, 20 rebounds, and 12 assists, making her the first WNBA player to do it.

“Triple Double Queen 👑@athomas_25 averaged a triple-double (16.0 PPG, 13.5 RPG, 10.0 APG) throughout week 10 of play, leading the @ConnecticutSun to a 2-0 record. Her efforts have earned her Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors,” the WNBA official account tweeted on Tuesday.

Thomas’s eye-popping WNBA stats have Connecticut just one game behind the New York Liberty in the WNBA standings. This is despite losing Brionna Jones for the season. Along with Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and Tiffany Hayes have also stepped up. And Olivia Nelson-Ododa has helped anchor the middle off the bench.

Connecticut has not taken a step back despite losing both Joneses (Jonquel, the former MVP, left in the offseason). The team ranks second in the league in defensive rating (98.9) and third in net rating (+7.5).

This strong defense has allowed Connecticut to shut down teams consistently. Only three times has Connecticut allowed a team to hit the 90-point mark this season, and two were against Las Vegas. It’s partly why seven of its last nine games have gone under the total.

The Sun also became the first team to beat Las Vegas. However, Connecticut is just 1-3 against Las Vegas and New York. This team will continue to be favored as it is in the Sun vs Mercury odds. But to be a genuine title threat, it must deliver against the two teams ahead of it.

Mercury Giving Fans Something To Cheer For

This season is all but lost for Phoenix. As one of the worst WNBA teams, Phoenix can look forward to adding either Paige Bueckers or Angel Reese in the WNBA Draft next April. If the team continues to lose, Caitlin Clark could be coming over. But forget “tanking.” The Mercury have actually started winning at home.

The Mercury has gotten it done at home, led by Diana Taurasi’s renaissance. They have blowout victories over Washington, Atlanta, and Chicago. The team also upset Connecticut the last time they played. In fact, Phoenix is 5-2 against the spread (ATS) as an underdog at home.

Taurasi was named the West Player of the Week thanks to her scoring outburst. She averaged 30.8 points on 54.3% shooting. The 10-time All-Star was also unstoppable from deep as she hit 20 of her 42 3-point attempts. And she became the first WNBA player to hit the 10,000-point mark.

“When you get someone who’s talented in that [fearless] mindset and works on her game as much as she’s worked on her game over the years, that’s what happens,” Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma said.

The legendary figure coached Taurasi in college and as part of Team USA. They won three NCAA titles and a pair of Olympic Gold Medals together.

Taurasi has cooled off since her explosion last week. For Phoenix to stand a chance of covering the Sun vs Mercury odds, her scoring will be needed.
