The Illinois Fighting Illini won the Big Ten Championship thanks to major performances from Terrence Shannon Jr.
In the Big Ten Tournament, Shannon Jr. added 28, 40, and 34 points in the three games that led Illinois to a Big Ten Championship. He’s become one of the top NCAA basketball players in the nation.
Shannon is a senior guard who is super crafty at getting to the foul line. He saw 44 foul shots in those three games. He knows how to get to the foul line and bait his defenders.
After making it through the Big Ten, Illinois had an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Fighting Illini would’ve made the NCAA Tournament regardless, but it always feels good knowing you’re guaranteed a spot.
They’ll be a three-seed against 14-seeded Morehead State. Shannon Jr. and Illinois want to be the first Big Ten team since 2019 to make it out of the first round after winning the Big Ten Championship.
Illinois will need some major Terrence Shannon Jr stats to get into the Sweet 16 and beyond.
The Early College Days
Before Shannon Jr. ended up in Illinois, he played three seasons with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In those three seasons, he never scored more than 13 points in any season.
He wasn’t even attempting ten shots a game with Texas Tech. It kind of made sense. He was scraping for playing time against some other elite NCAAB players on those Texas Tech teams.
However, by 2022, he decided to make a change and went to Illinois for his final two seasons.
The Rise To Stardom
In two seasons at Illinois, Shannon Jr. broke out and became one of the best players in college basketball. He averaged 17.2 points in his first season with Illinois but has since scored 23 points per game this year.
Shannon Jr. has taken a career-high 14.3 shots per game and still only shoots 36.2% from downtown. But he’s getting to the foul line at a much higher pace than ever before. The Illinois Fighting Illini have seen their NCAAB scores rise with Shannon’s success on the court.
However, his name was thrown around due to a rape charge in Kansas. Because of this, he missed six games during his suspension. Illinois still went 4-2 in his absence. At the time, an arrest warrant was issued, and Shannon Jr. was immediately suspended from all team activities.
However, a U.S. District Court Judge found that the university had violated Shannon’s civil rights. Illinois had to reinstate Shannon Jr. Once he came back, head coach Brad Underwood brought him off the bench but eventually started him in every game after.
The charges were alleged. People around Shannon, including Shannon Jr., deny the incident. But that didn’t help his character this NCAAB season.

Shannon Jr. Is A Big Ten Champion
In the Big Ten Tournament, there were no answers on stopping Terrence Shannon Jr. In the semifinal NCAAB matchup against Nebraska, he scored 40 points while shooting 50% from the field. He also nailed 5-for-9 from downtown and sunk 13-of-16 from the foul line.
Although he didn’t produce on the glass or assist many buckets, Shannon Jr. still didn’t have a single turnover in that win. He helped Illinois to 98 points, and the ball was in his hands a lot. For him not to have a single turnover was probably more impressive than his 40-point performance.
In the Big Ten Championship, it was more of the same. Wisconsin had nothing. Shannon Jr. scored 34 points, four rebounds, and two assists in 36 minutes.
Illinois escaped with a 93-87 victory after Shannon shot 8-for-15 from the field. He followed up Saturday’s semifinals by going 3-for-6 from three and draining 15-of-17 foul shots.
The game plan against Illinois is probably not to let Shannon Jr. get to the foul line. That’s where he scored 38 of his 102 points in the three games during the Big Ten Tournament. But as mentioned before, Shannon Jr. is crafty. He knows how to get to the foul line and bait you into a foul. That’s one of his many strong traits on the basketball court.
Illinois is currently +3500 odds to win March Madness with Shannon leading the way.
He’s Off To The NBA Next!
Shannon Jr. is also an NBA prospect. As a fifth-year senior, his college basketball career will end once Illinois either wins the NCAA Tournament or gets eliminated.
Many mock drafts have Shannon Jr. being drafted around slot No. 15. He would be one of only a few seniors off the board during that time. Most of these early picks are used for freshmen with high potential.
While Shannon Jr. has high potential, he’s also above 21. Many NBA teams would rather have young players who they can develop into stars and hold for a long period of time.
Either way, it looks like Shannon Jr. will be headed to the NBA after the NCAA Tournament. He’ll have some questions and explaining to do in interviews with NBA teams. We’ll see which NBA teams do their due diligence and which teams trust him the most.
