The UConn Huskies want to add back-to-back National Championships to their resume this season. The Huskies are 24-2 and have just one loss in Big East play.

They’ve currently won 14 consecutive games and are ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll.

Last year’s championship team lost many contributors. But this team retained its point guard, Tristen Newton, who has been one of the NCAA best players in the nation this season.

Newton has scored 15 points per game for UConn this season, playing in his fifth season in college basketball. He initially committed to East Carolina, where he played for three NCAAB seasons. Newton added 17.7 points in his third season with five assists and 4.8 rebounds.

That production caught UConn’s eyes, and he came over to the team last year. Newton and the Huskies won the title last year and are in line to win it this year.

It’s no coincidence that Tristen Newton is on these high-caliber teams.

Let’s take a look at Tristen Newton stats during his UConn days and in his college career.

Newton’s Time With East Carolina

Tristen Newton was born in El Paso, Texas, and was recruited by East Carolina heading into the 2019-20 season. He played in 31 games in his freshman season but started in 19. He gained much experience as a freshman, playing nearly 30 minutes a game.

In those 30 minutes, Newton scored 11 points but shot just 39% from the floor. The following season, he only played in 17 games and started in 16. In those 16 games, he shot 34.8% from the field and scored only 8.7 points after an injury sidelined him for half of the season.

By 2021-22, it was redemption time. Newton returned and scored 17.7 points per game with five assists and 4.8 rebounds in 34.8 minutes. He shot a career-best 43.5% from the field and nailed nearly 88% of his foul shots despite taking almost six foul shots per game.

Newton’s Commitment To UConn

With two years of eligibility remaining, Newton transferred from East Carolina and joined the UConn Huskies.

Critics weren’t sure of his immediate impact, knowing other guards like Tyrese Martin and Jordan Hawkins would be a part of the team.

However, he was a big part of the UConn Championship team last year, scoring 10.1 points per game with 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds despite only hitting 2.7 shots per game.

This year, Newton has been asked to do more in the absence of Martin, Hawkins, and Andre Jackson Jr. He’s taken nearly four more shots per game than last year and has played in almost five more minutes per game.

His three-point shooting is down, along with his free-throw percentage. But he’s added more than two rebounds per game than any other season and has also earned a career-high in assists with 5.8 per game.

Newton’s Near Triple-Double Against Marquette

The UConn Huskies had a major matchup against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday.

It was the No. 1 team in the nation against the No. 4 team. With UConn at home, the Huskies were favorites, but many thought we’d get a competitive game.

The Huskies won that game 81-53 in a significant blowout win. That victory led the Huskies to their first unanimous No. 1 in the AP Poll. They were every single voter’s first choice for that top spot.

Newton added 15 points with eight rebounds and eight assists in that game. He also earned a block and a steal in 32 minutes.

Newton isn’t a high-volume shooter. He only took ten shots, with seven of them from downtown. However, he’s added at least eight assists in four of his last six games.

Against the Manhattan Jaspers in November, Newton added his first and only triple-double of the season. That’s ultimately what he brings to the table. He’s a triple-double threat every time he’s on the floor. He’s not the most efficient scorer, but he’s super efficient on the glass and with his passes. He makes everyone around him better and isn’t selfish at all.

There have been games where he’ll play 30 minutes and still take just three shots. On February 10, against Georgetown, on the road, Newton had just six points but added nine assists and six rebounds in a 25-point win.

Newton will impact the game in any way he has to. He’s got an incredible feel for the game and is a major reason why the Huskies are the best team in the nation.

The Huskies will be a lot of people’s college basketball picks to win the NCAA Tournament. They’re one of few teams with the college basketball stats, analytics, and resume to complete the job. The NCAAB odds also agree in the futures market.
