Massive Expectations Await ‘Noles

After a brief spell in college football purgatory, Florida State is back where it belongs. Following four consecutive sub-.500 seasons, the Seminoles re-established themselves last season under Mike Norvell, winning 10 games, including their first bowl victory since 2017. While success can be fleeting, especially nowadays with the fluidity of the transfer portal, the Seminoles appear to be back on the map as a player in the national landscape. Quarterback Jordan Travis returns, as does defensive end Jared Verse, giving the Seminoles two game-changing talents at premium positions.

The Seminoles will be tested, especially in the ACC. Clemson is here to stay as a national contender, while Mack Brown has North Carolina on the rise again. But there’s no reason why the Seminoles shouldn’t, at worst, be in the mix for the College Football Playoff. Travis, who threw for 24 touchdowns and only five interceptions in 2022, gives them a chance to beat practically anybody.

National Championship Odds: It’s Title or Bust

The Seminoles have a legitimate Heisman contender in Travis — at +1100, he owns the second-best odds on the board behind USC quarterback Caleb Williams — in addition to some big upgrades at the skill positions. Look for freshman Vandrevius Jacobs to make an immediate impact at wideout. So long as Travis stays healthy and performs to his potential, the Seminoles are among the few teams capable of competing with the big boys of the SEC and Big Ten for college football supremacy. They currently have the eighth-shortest title odds on the board.

Conference Odds: ACC Shaping Up as Two-Team Race

While North Carolina should draw plenty of attention thanks to the return of quarterback Drake Maye — the sophomore is a projected top-10 NFL pick — the ACC is shaping up to be a two-team race between Florida State and Clemson. The 2023 Florida State Seminoles odds have stayed relatively stagnant, ranging between +165 and +170, though Clemson’s favored by a smidge at the moment. Regardless, barring an upset, plenty will be at stake when the schools meet on Sept. 23 in Death Valley.

Regular Season Wins: Double-Digits Within Reach

Florida State will be tested right from the jump, starting with a matchup on Sept. 3 in Orlando, Fla. The Seminoles are currently listed as 2.5-point underdogs, via college football point spreads. The Seminoles also have to visit Clemson and will close the season on Nov. 25 at rival Florida. Those road games may be difficult to navigate, but the Seminoles should, at worst, match last year’s total of 10 wins. Anything less would be a big disappointment.

To Make Playoffs: ‘Noles on Short List of Top Contenders

Florida State was something of an afterthought this time last season. Unranked in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, the Seminoles knocked off LSU on Labor Day weekend along the way to a 4-0 start. Though they sputtered in October, losing three straight games in ACC play, the Seminoles finished strong, beating Oklahoma 35-32 to win the Cheez-It Bowl, per NCAAF scores. This season, Florida State, a +275 pick to qualify for the College Football Playoff, won’t sneak up on anyone.
