Jack Campbell Iowa Linebacker in NFL

Former Iowa Hawkeye Looks to Make Mark With Detroit Lions

When it came to defense players in the 2023 NFL Draft, Jack Campbell Iowa linebacker, was one of the first names that came to mind. You can’t blame anybody who thought of Campbell, who was the ninth defensive player taken and went No. 18 overall to Detroit.

Campbell capped off a stellar career at Iowa, helping the Hawkeyes to become one of the top defenses in the NCAAF rankings. Iowa was in the top five in total defense in 2022. Campbell won the Butkus Award as the top linebacker in college football and was a unanimous All-American selection. But the awards didn’t stop there, as he was named the Big Ten’s Nagurski–Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and Butkus–Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year.

Early Career

Campbell attended Cedar Falls High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he was a two-sport star in basketball and football. He helped the basketball team to two state championships. In football, he became the school’s all-time leading tackler with 338. He set a single-season record with 168 tackles and signed with Iowa to play football.

As a true freshman, Campbell got into two NCAA football games and recorded five tackles. As a sophomore, he played in five games but had 29 tackles and an interception. But he took off his junior season.

Playing in all 14 of Iowa’s games, Campbell had 140 tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. He was a first-team All-Big Ten selection, helping the Hawkeyes advance to the conference championship game.

Entering 2022, Campbell was named the Big Ten preseason defensive player of the year. He then went out and showed the NCAAF predictions for him were completely justified. He finished with 125 tackles, two interceptions, and 5.5 tackles for loss.

The Jack Campbell Iowa career stats show 299 tackles, with 12.5 for a loss, five interceptions, and three recovered fumbles. He also forced three fumbles.

Jack Campbell Iowa standout, was taken a little higher in the NFL Draft than some of the experts predicted. But Detroit had the chance to watch him often and didn’t take a chance he’s fall elsewhere.
