Missouri Tigers 2023 Future Odds

Once again, Mizzou may find contention hard to come by in the SEC

The Missouri Tigers hope to climb the ranks in the SEC in 2023. But that may prove plenty difficult, given the depth of competition. Such is life while residing in the country’s strongest college football conference.

We break down the Missouri Tigers future odds in our team preview.

Life in the SEC Proving Difficult for Missouri

Which direction are the Missouri Tigers headed? At the moment, this program appears stuck in the mud. The Tigers went 6-7 and made a bowl game for the second straight year in 2022, losing 27-17 to Wake Forest in the Gasparilla Bowl. The Tigers haven’t won a bowl since 2014, their second-to-last season under head coach Gary Pinkel.

Missouri hopes to improve an offense that ranked 82nd nationally, per college football stats. Sophomore Jake Garcia is expected to take over at quarterback. Garcia spent his first two collegiate seasons at Miami, where he threw for 803 yards and five touchdowns in 2022. He’ll need to develop new weapons after wide receiver Dominic Lovett transferred to Georgia.

Since leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, Missouri has been mediocre at best, with a 25-41 record in conference play since 2015. The SEC has only gotten stronger, making life more difficult for the Tigers. They’ve been ranked once in three seasons under head coach Eli Drinkwitz, peaking at No. 25 in 2020.

National Championship Odds: No. No. And … No

Let’s not get crazy. Cracking the Top 25 poll at some point this season would be a big win. So, too, would a bowl appearance. But a national title is a pipedream. The Missouri Tigers future odds say as much. They’re now +30000 after opening +25000.

Missouri has never won a national championship. Barring a major surprise, that’ll remain the case for a while.

Conference Odds: Fat Chance

Missouri’s +10000 odds match the longest in the SEC. It’s no secret why. The Tigers haven’t finished better than .500 in conference play since 2014.

Eight of the last nine SEC titles have gone to either Georgia or Alabama. Both schools are expected to be at the head of the class again. LSU is a likely preseason Top 10 team, and then there’s Tennessee, Ole Miss and Texas A&M to worry about. Missouri could climb the NCAAF rankings and play into bowl contention. But an SEC championship? Very, very unlikely.

Regular Season Wins: SEC Play to Make or Break Tigers

Missouri has won six games in three of the last four NCAAF seasons. Expectations are slightly higher in 2023, with the Tigers projected for 6.5 wins. The Over is juiced to even money after opening at +110.

Whether the Tigers can exceed expectations depends on how they fare in SEC play. The conference will again be a bear, with Georgia seeking its third straight national championship. The Tigers will visit Georgia, a +215 national title favorite, on Nov. 4. They’ll also have tough home tests against LSU (Oct. 7) and Tennessee (Nov. 11). Can they steal one of those games? If not, the Tigers won’t have much room for error. Keep that in mind as you assess the Missouri Tigers future odds.

Highlighting the non-conference slate is a Sept. 16 date with Kansas State, the defending Big 12 champion. That’s an opportunity for a marquee early-season win.

To Make Playoffs: It’s a Real Longshot

Oddsmakers aren’t even considering it a possibility. Frankly, neither should you. Missouri hasn’t posted a winning record since 2018. Its last double-digit win season was in 2014.

Theoretically, to make the College Football Playoff, Missouri would need to, at worst, reach the SEC Championship Game. That seems incredibly unlikely, given the strength of the conference.
