South Alabama Jaguars 2023 Future Odds

Jaguars Slight Favorites to Win Sun Belt Conference

What can South Alabama do for an encore? The Jaguars had never won more than six games in a season since becoming an FBS team in 2012. But the Jaguars broke through last year with a 10-3 record and a 7-1 mark in conference play. Not bad for a team that had a win total of 5.5 for 2022. But the South Alabama Jaguars future odds are quite a bit different this season after last year’s strong showing.

Jaguars Return Plenty of Offense

The Jaguars return many of the main pieces from an offense that averaged 31.2 points per game last season. Quarterback Carter Bradley threw for 3,343 yards and 28 touchdowns a year ago. He’ll have the team’s top two receivers, Devin Voisin and Collin Lacy, back to throw the ball to.

La’Damian Webb returns in the backfield after rushing for 1,065 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added 21 receptions and two TDs through the air. The team’s second and third-leading rushers also return, so South Alabama is in good shape in the backfield.

Up front, the offensive line returns four starters and brought in a few players from the transfer portal to add to the team’s depth.

Defensively, the top six tacklers are back from last year’s team that allowed an average NCAAF score of 21.3 points per game. The defensive line is solid and the linebacking group is also pretty good.

The secondary isn’t bad and returns everybody but one starter. But South Alabama does return safety Keith Gallmon, who missed last year with an injury. So there’s plenty of experience in the defensive backfield.

National Championship Odds: Asking Way Too Much

Anything more than a conference title is simply asking too much from South Alabama. The Jaguars will be a pretty good football team. But that’s about it.

Conference Odds: Something Else About the Team’s Chances

The South Alabama Jaguars future odds have the team as the favorite to win the Sun Belt at +290. That’s a far cry from the +1500 of a year ago. It makes sense, but South Alabama’s NCAAF schedule isn’t going to be an easy one. The key conference game in the Sun Belt’s West Division could be on Nov. 2 when the Jaguars visit Troy. But that’s about the only tough away conference game the Jaguars have. They get Marshall and Louisiana at home.

Regular Season Wins: Eight Wins Sounds About Right

The South Alabama Jaguars future odds on the win total are pretty much where they should be. In addition to a couple of tough Sun Belt Conference games, the Jaguars open with a tough game at Tulane. The early NCAAF odds have Tulane favored by 7 points. Then there’s the Sept. 16 game at Oklahoma State, which will definitely be a tough game.

The Jaguars can’t afford to stumble in any of the games they’re supposed to win if they want to get to eight wins or more. A 1-2 start is entirely possible, but the Jaguars should be able to win their games until they travel to Troy. Marshall won’t be a pushover and Texas State can play tough at home from time to time.

South Alabama didn’t really beat anybody last year. Only Southern Miss had a winning record as an FBS team. But the Jaguars did win and that’s all that counts. Matching last year’s win total is possible, but a little unlikely. A seven- or eight-win season appears to be much more realistic for the Jaguars.
