Old Dominion Monarchs 2023 Future Odds

Old Dominion in For Long Season

Old Dominion began its 2022 football season with an upset of Virginia Tech. And it all went downhill from there, as the Monarchs finished 3-9 on the season. Not that Old Dominion was expected to do much. The team had a win total of 4.5. There were some close losses along the way. But two of the team’s three victories were by three points. The Old Dominion Monarchs future odds paint a team in trouble and it’s hard to argue with the sportsbook here.

A Team in Transition

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out a team finishing with a 3-9 record probably didn’t have a lot of talented players. But for Old Dominion, a number of its best players have graduated or transferred elsewhere. Quarterback Hayden Wolff takes his 2,900 passing yards and 18 TDs to Western Michigan. His backups have left, also. That leaves former Fordham backup Grant Wilson as a likely choice for the quarterback.

Leading rusher Blake Watson is off to Memphis while leading receiver Ali Jennings is headed to Virginia Tech. Not to be left out, the offensive line saw its top two tackles depart.

Getting production from the offensive line will be huge for the Monarchs this season for whoever starts at quarterback. The average NCAAF score for Old Dominion last year was just 19.5 points. The Monarchs have to do a little better if they want to win more than three games.

The NCAAF rankings had the Old Dominion defense at No. 117 in the nation. And that was before losing a couple of its key players Alonzo Ford and Chazz Wallace. The nation’s leading tackler, Jason Henderson, is back at linebacker and will be busy once again this season.

The secondary lost three of four starters, which isn’t necessarily a horrible thing considering how they played. But a shaky defense is now going to be without a few of its better players from a year ago. That doesn’t bode well for the Monarchs.

National Championship Odds: Not High Enough

Old Dominion figures to be fighting to avoid the Sun Belt Conference basement. It won’t be fighting for a national title. The Monarchs are +100000, which is the same as last year.

Conference Odds: Not Going to Happen

The Old Dominion Monarchs future odds to win the Sun Belt Conference title are +8000. That’s up from last year’s +5000. But the result is likely going to be the same. The only good thing you can say about Old Dominion is ULM has higher odds to win the conference. There are between eight and 10 teams in the Sun Belt better than Old Dominion. It’s hard to picture anything better than two wins in the conference.

Regular Season Wins: Win Total is Low and Rightly So

The Old Dominion Monarchs future odds on the season win total is just 3.5 games. But that appears to be at least one-half game too many. It’s hard to imagine Old Dominion winning any more than two or three games. The Monarchs should beat Texas A&M-Commerce. But that’s about the only game the NCAAF stats will have Old Dominion predicted to beat a team.

Ricky Rahne is a good coach who gets the most out of his players. So it’s likely he’ll lead the Monarchs to an upset of somebody this season, perhaps even two. But that will still leave Old Dominion with just three wins on the season. The number is low, but the number of Monarch victories should be even lower.
