New Additions Provide Optimism

The Ole Miss Rebels sputtered down the stretch in 2022, finishing 8-5 (4-4 in SEC play) after a 7-0 start. Despite an ugly finish, which included a 24-22 loss to rival Mississippi in the Egg Bowl, optimism surrounds the Rebels moving forward.

Head coach Lane Kiffin struck it big in the transfer portal this offseason, landing several potential contributors, including wide receiver Zakhari Franklin. The former UTSA standout had 94 catches for 1,136 yards and 15 touchdowns, tied for the second most in FBS. Between Franklin and tailback Quinshon Judkins, who rushed for 1,567 yards and 16 touchdowns as a freshman, the Rebels’ offense should be in good hands.

To help fortify the other side of the ball, Kiffin hired a new defensive coordinator in Pete Golding.

As always, Ole Miss’ fate will largely be decided in SEC play. The conference is loaded again, headlined by two-time defending national champion Georgia. The Rebels have made gains under Kiffin, going 23-13 with three bowl appearances in three seasons. That includes trip to the Sugar Bowl in 2021. That said, there’s still room to grow before the Rebels can live alongside the SEC heavyweights.

National Championship Odds: Longshot at Best

Ole Miss opened +5000 to win the national championship, a number that’s since doubled. The Rebels have some obvious questions to answer before they can take the next step. The defense regressed last season. They allowed more than 40 points in three of their final six games, including the 42-25 Texas Bowl loss to Texas Tech.

Jaxson Dart played well after coming over from USC, passing for 2,974 yards and 20 touchdowns per NCAA football stats. However, Kiffin brought in two other quarterbacks via the portal in Spencer Sanders (Oklahoma State) and Walker Howard (LSU) to challenge for the starting job. That obviously needs to be ironed out.

Theoretically, the Rebels would need to, at minimum, make the SEC Championship in order to be in the conversation for a national championship. At the moment, that seems like a big ask. Too big, in fact.

Conference Odds: In the Mix, but Far from Favored

Since the start of the preseason, the Ole Miss Rebels future odds have increased slightly from +5000 to +4000.Currently, only five teams own shorter odds. However, two of them are Georgia (-110) and Alabama (+300). Eight of the last nine SEC titles have gone to either the Bulldogs or Crimson Tide. Need we say more?

Even if the Rebels exceed expectations, it’s hard to see them making this kind of a jump. The top of the SEC is simply that good.

Regular Season Wins: Same Old, Same Old

For the third straight season, Ole Miss is projected to win 7.5 NCAA football games. The Rebels cashed in the Over in both 2021 and 2022, and they could very well do so again if the schedule breaks right. The non-conference slate is relatively light outside of a Sept. 9 trip to defending AAC champion Tulane. On the heels of its stunning Cotton Bowl victory over USC, Tulane is likely to be in the preseason Top 25.

The meat of competition will come in SEC play, which kicks off Sept. 23 with a trip to Alabama. The following week, the Rebels will host LSU. It doesn’t get much more difficult than that. Nevertheless, oddsmakers seem confident in their ability to exceed expectations once again. The Ole Miss Rebels future odds of Over 7.5 are now better than plus money (-110) after opening at +105.

To Make Playoffs: Don’t Bet on It

The SEC will have at least one, if not two schools in the College Football Playoff. But it’s unlikely to be Ole Miss. The path is simply too difficult.
