The Team to Beat

The Georgia Bulldogs blitzed TCU 65-7 in last year’s National Championship game, joining 2018 Clemson and 2019 LSU as the only teams to go 15-0 in the College Football Playoff era. Heisman finalist Stetson Bennett is gone, but the Bulldogs remain the clear team-to-beat.

With that comes immense pressure. Three-peats are incredibly rare in college football. But Georgia may just be that good. Good enough, in fact, to remain SEC and national championship favorites, according to the Georgia Bulldogs future odds.

No matter who takes over for Bennett at quarterback, the Bulldogs will be loaded with talent. Tight end Brock Bowers, who had 63 receptions for 942 yards as a sophomore, is a future NFL first-round pick. Joining Bowers are wideout Ladd McConkey and transfers Dominic Lovett (Missouri) and RaRa Thomas (Texas A&M). The Bulldogs also return three All-SEC offensive linemen and will be dynamic again on defense, led by linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson.

The SEC is certainly no cakewalk, but if all goes according to plan, the Bulldogs should find themselves among the last teams standing. Again.

National Championship Odds: It’s Title or Bust

Georgia is bidding to become the first three-time defending national champion since Minnesota in 1934-36, which completed the trifecta in the first year of the Associated Press poll. The Bulldogs are a +225 college football betting favorite, slightly better than this time last year (+350).

Sure, the Bulldogs lose Bennett. But head coach Kirby Smart will likely just reload, with Carson Beck the presumed starter. Beck got his feet wet last year, completing 26-of-35 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns. He is currently +1800 to win the Heisman Trophy. Given the talent around him, the Bulldogs should just pick up where they left off atop the NCAA football standings. With the expectations being what they are, it is a good place to be.

With +600 odds, Alabama is currently viewed as the biggest threat to a three-peat, followed by Ohio State (+700) and Michigan (+900).

Conference Odds: Best of a Loaded Bunch

Eight of the last nine SEC titles have gone to either Georgia or Alabama. They remain the two best NCAAF teams in the undisputed best conference. After opening as a +105 favorite, the Bulldogs are now better than even money (-110) to win the SEC. Alabama is next in line at +300, followed by LSU at +450. Everyone else is currently 12/1 or longer.

Until proven otherwise, the SEC is Georgia’s to lose.

Regular Season Wins: Anything’s Possible

Georgia has combined to win 29 games the last two seasons. That, of course, includes the postseason. Furthermore, it’s hit double digits five of the last six seasons, with the exception of the COVID-interrupted 2020 campaign. Even in a loaded SEC, the Bulldogs should come pretty close to cashing in here. But with 12 games, there’s essentially no margin for error. It’s why the Over is juiced to +130, per Georgia Bulldogs future odds.

The non-conference NCAAF schedule is sprinkled with cupcakes. The Bulldogs open Sept. 2 against FCS program UT Martin. They also get Ball State and UAB and close Nov. 25 with in-state rival Georgia Tech. But they’ll make up for it in SEC play.

To Make Playoffs: Better Than Even Money

Georgia made the CFP three of the last six seasons. Anything short of another trip will be a massive disappointment. The Bulldogs don’t necessarily need to win the SEC to qualify, but doing so would obviously cement their case.
