Appalachian State Mountaineers Future Odds 2023

Appalachian State Could Contend for Sun Belt Conference Title

Last season’s 6-6 record was a major disappointment for the Mountaineers. Sure, there was the upset of Texas A&M, but with two of its six victories over FCS teams, Appalachian State wasn’t bowl eligible. The team lost a bit of talent from last year’s squad but has some key players coming in. The App State Mountaineers future odds are a little generous, so it might be a decent time to get behind the boys from Boone, N.C.

Mountaineers’ Running Game Will Be Key

Appalachian State is typically one of the best-rushing teams in the NCAA rankings. Last season, the Mountaineers averaged more than 200 yards per game on the ground. Appalachian State was 6-2 when rushing for 150 or more yards and 0-4 when it didn’t. Leading rusher Nate Noel is back, as is Ahmani Marshall, who tied for third in rushing. Maquel Haywood had 473 yards for Navy last season, giving the team a solid rotation in the backfield.

Replacing quarterback Chase Brice won’t be easy. Redshirt freshman Ryan Burger appears to be the starter heading into fall practice. The team also brought in JUCO transfer Joey Aguilar from Diablo Valley College.

Whoever plays quarterback will have the team’s top four wideouts from last season back and an offensive line that welcomes Georgia transfer Griffin Scroggs to join an already decent group up front. Isaiah Helms is solid at center and Damion Daley could move from guard to tackle this season.

Linebacker Andrew Parker leads a defense that was a little below the team’s standards at times, allowing 26.75 points per game. Appalachian State allowed 42.26% on third-down conversions, which is an area it needs to improve on in 2023.

The team’s top two sackers have both moved on, so the Mountaineers will need to find somebody to put pressure on the quarterback. The linebackers are decent but don’t have a lot of experience. The secondary will be decent, with the team having more experience at safety than at cornerback. Tyrek Funderburk is coming over from Richmond and should hold down one of the cornerback spots.

National Championship Odds: Too Tall of an Order

The App State Mountaineers future odds are +100000, which tells you all you need to know about the team’s national championship chances. App State is a good Sun Belt Conference team. But that’s about it.

Conference Odds: Mountaineers Not Getting a Lot of Respect

The Mountaineers were the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt last season at +250. After struggling a bit in close games a year ago, the Mountaineers are now +650 to win the conference this year. Those are pretty tempting odds on a team that has been in the mix most seasons.

App State struggled to win on the road last year, going 1-4 in the NCAA scores away from home. This year, Coastal Carolina and Marshall both visit Appalachian State and the Mountaineers don’t play Troy and South Alabama from the West Division. The schedule is favorable for the Mountaineers to make a run at the title if the quarterback play is decent.

Regular Season Wins: Appalachian State Should Go Over 6.5 Wins

The App State Mountaineers future odds on season wins are set at 6.5. There’s no reason why the Mountaineers shouldn’t win at least seven or eight games this year. Appalachian State has a pair of tough road games in September, visiting North Carolina and Wyoming. But the Mountaineers should be in good shape until November when they visit James Madison and Georgia State.

The NCAAF predictions had the Mountaineers with a win total of 8.5 last year. This year, there appears to be an overreaction to last year’s record. Five of Appalachian State’s six losses were by seven points or less last year. The lone exception was a 36-24 loss at Texas State. The Mountaineers had a 436-334 yardage advantage, but a 94-yard interception for a touchdown by the Bobcats in the second half was too much for App State to overcome.

The Mountaineers don’t need to fix a lot. Tighten up on third down a little bit and play a little better defense in the red zone. If App State can do one of those two things, the wins will come, along with a return to a bowl game.
