UAB Blazers 2023 Future Odds

UAB Has Plenty of Questions as Team Joins AAC

The UAB Blazers make the move from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference with a new head coach in Trent Dilfer. The Blazers were 7-6 last season and did lose quite a bit of talent from that squad. How the team fares this season will depend on a number of new faces, both players and coaches. The 2023 UAB Blazers stats will have a tough time matching the offensive numbers Alabama-Birmingham put up in 2022.

Dilfer Doing Things His Way

Coach Dilfer won’t be accused of doing things by the book. He tabbed Alex Mortensen, the son of ESPN football analyst Christ Mortensen, to be the offensive coordinator. Alex has some coaching experience but spent the last few years as an analyst for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

His defensive coordinator, Sione Ta’ufo’ou, ran Dilfer’s defense at Lipscomb Academy, a high school. This is the first-ever college coaching gig. Dilfer is opening himself up to criticism if the offense or defense struggles. But he’ll look like a genius should either succeed.

The UAB defense will have good size up front but will be replacing the majority of its linebackers. The secondary isn’t bad, but the defense will need the linebacking crew to step in and get the job done. The Blazers will likely struggle a bit in the college football defensive rankings.

The Blazers lost quarterback Dylan Hopkins, but have former Baylor quarterback Jacob Zeno and Louisiana Tech transfer Landry Lyddy to play behind center. Zeno looks to have the inside edge on the starting position.

UAB was eighth in the nation in rushing last year, but expect the 2023 UAB Blazers stats to show more emphasis on the passing game. The Blazers will still run the ball. But Dilfer is likely to throw more than UAB has done in the past.

Senior receivers Tejhaun Palmer and Samario Rudolph should help stretch the field a bit. Both have decent speed and are capable of making big plays.

Even though the Blazers won six games and added a victory in the Bahamas Bowl, the 2022 season was a bit of a disappointment. The team’s win total was 8.5 and the Blazers were well under that. Add a 4-9 record against the college football point spreads, and the Blazers could have done better. But six wins and a bowl game in 2023 will be an accomplishment.

National Championship Odds: No Chance for Blazers

The Blazers are +50000, which is the same as they were last year to win the national title. The result this year will also be the same as last year as far as winning the title. It’s not going to happen.

Conference Odds: Too Tough a Task for Blazers

Given time, the Blazers will probably be one of the better teams in the AAC. Dilfer should be a good recruiter and bring some decent players to Birmingham. But it’s not going to happen overnight. There are at least eight teams in the American Athletic Conference that look to be better than the Blazers this season. UAB might surprise some people. But that’s not the way you want to bet.

Regular Season Wins: The Bar is Lowered for Blazers

UAB’s season win total is quite a bit lower than last season, but it’s hard to argue with the 6.0 wins that the Blazers were saddled with. The college football schedule has a sure loss when UAB travels to Georgia, but the opener vs North Carolina A&T is almost a guaranteed victory. The conference road schedule isn’t easy, with games at Tulane, UTSA, Navy, and North Texas, among others.

Memphis and Florida Atlantic will be tough home games, but the Blazers have several others they are capable of winning. UAB looks to be between a five-win team and a seven-win team. How a few of the close games go will determine the Blazers’ bowl fate and how they fare against the season’s win total. The team needs the 2023 UAB Blazers stats to show more takeaways than last season’s 18 and their chances of a winning season will increase.
