Utah State 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Tough Non-Conference Slate Could Shape Utah State's Season

Despite returning to a bowl game, the Utah State Aggies were something of a disappointment in 2022. They won six games but fell short of defending their Mountain West Conference title.

Can they make up for it this year? Read on as we break down some key 2023 Utah State Aggies stats in our team preview.

Tough Road Ahead for Aggies

The Utah State Aggies failed in their bid to repeat as Mountain West Conference champions, finishing 6-7 (5-3 in conference) in 2022. The Aggies did make a bowl game, losing 38-10 to Memphis in the First Responders Bowl, but that was a small consolation on the heels of Blake Anderson’s memorable head-coaching debut.

The Aggies were routinely gashed on defense. Opponents averaged 31.1 points per game, 105th in the college football defense rankings. Five scored at least 35 points. The Aggies must hope for significant improvement on that side of the ball. Fortunately, multiple contributors are back, including safety Ike Larsen, who had a team-best four interceptions and was voted Second Team All-Conference as a freshman. But they’ll obviously need more than Larsen to turn in better 2023 Utah State Aggies stats.

The last four seasons have produced a different champion. Boise State won the Mountain West in 2019, followed by San Jose State, Utah State and Fresno State, respectively. The conference has been fairly unpredictable of late. But this year, the deck seems to be stacked against the Aggies.

National Championship Odds: No. No. And No.

A national championship? Is that even remotely possibly? Seriously, outside of adding the likes of Georgia and Michigan to their schedule last minute — and then beating them, along with every other opponent — there’s absolutely nothing the Aggies can do to make the College Football Playoff, let alone win it all. It doesn’t matter what 2023 Utah State Aggies stats they post.

There’s really no reason to try to cash in +100000. It. Is. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Conference Odds: In the Mix, At Best

The Aggies have already beaten expectations once under Anderson, overcoming +10000 odds to capture their first Mountain West title in 2021. That also, of course, happened to be Anderson’s first season at the helm. The Aggies aren’t nearly as much of a longshot now, coming in at +2500. However, it’s a bit much to expect them to drum up more magic.

Boise State is a comfortable +130 favorite, followed by Fresno State at +380. The Bulldogs are the defending champions but must replace All-Mountain West quarterback Jake Haener. And then there’s Air Force (+430) and San Diego State (+700).A whole lot will need to break in the Aggies’ favor for them to wind up back atop the Mountain West. That’s just the reality.

Regular Season Wins: Non-Conference Could Shape Season

On the surface, 5.5 wins seem attainable. Utah State underwhelmed last year yet managed to beat that. Realistically, it should be able to do it again, right? Right? It’s not as simple as it sounds.

Why? Utah State’s NCAAF schedule is tough. Start with Sept. 2 at Iowa. The Aggies are currently 22.5-point underdogs. After a winnable matchup with FCS school Idaho State the following week, the Aggies will get James Madison and UConn to round out non-conference play. It’s not exactly Murderers’ Row, but for a ho-hum Group of Five program, it’s plenty difficult.

The Aggies will also get Mountain West contenders Air Force and Fresno St. before Halloween. That’s a lot to ask early in the season. It’s partly why the Over is juiced to +110.

To Make Playoffs: Don’t Waste Your Time

A team from the Mountain West? In the CFP? There is a reason there aren’t any odds, and it’s not because Utah State was simply forgotten. We’re fairly confident about that.
