Miami (OH) 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

RedHawks, Fifth-Shortest Title Odds in Mid-American

After yet another bowl appearance in 2022, the Miami (OH) RedHawks find themselves among the short list of contenders in the Mid-American Conference. The offense is healthy again, and defensively the RedHawks remain deep. What will that mean come September? We break down some key 2023 RedHawks stats in our team preview.

Continued Progress Under Martin

The RedHawks went 6-7 and made their third bowl in four years last season, losing 24-20 to UAB in the Bahamas Bowl. The Mid-American Conference is projected to be difficult, but the RedHawks should benefit from the return of quarterback Brett Gabbert, who missed most of 2022 with a shoulder injury.

When he did play, Gabbert was effective, completing 64.3% of his passes for 816 yards and four touchdowns. He should bolster an offense that ranked 113th nationally in scoring (20.2 PPG).

The RedHawks figure to be quite good on the other side of the ball, too. They were 61st in the college football defense rankings. All-MAC linebacker Ryan Wood is gone, but a hearty dose of talent returns, including linebacker Matthew Salopek.

While preseason favorite Toledo returns 16 starters, no MAC team has repeated since Northern Illinois in 2010-11. Year-in, and year-out, the MAC is among the country’s most balanced leagues, and that should remain the case moving forward. Fortunately, Miami (OH) is in good hands under head coach Chuck Martin. Expect strong 2023 RedHawks stats.

National Championship Odds: Not A Chance.

Need we say more? At +100000, Miami (OH) is the longest of longshots. Don’t bother trying to cash in. The RedHawks could go undefeated and still wouldn’t get enough love from the selection committee to have a shot at a national championship.

Conference Odds: In the Mix

The RedHawks are priced at +800 to win the MAC, the fifth-shortest odds behind defending champion Toledo (+170), Ohio (+270), Buffalo (+600) and Eastern Michigan (+750). They were even shorter last year, but a 1-3 start to MAC play ruined any chance they had at cashing in +450. They wound up finishing 113th in the Sagarin College Football ratings.

While Toledo may be primed to repeat, Miami (OH) can’t be overlooked. The RedHawks have finished .500 or better in MAC play seven straight years under Martin, an impressive feat of consistency in an ever-changing landscape.

They could get there again, but they’d be wise not to tempt fate with another slow start. Fortunately, they get bottom-feeder Kent State right off the bat in MAC play, followed by Bowling Green. There’s an opportunity to build some momentum heading into the meat of October.

Regular Season Wins: Expectations Rising

After opening at 6.5 wins, Miami (OH) has climbed to 7.0 with juice shaded toward the Under. The RedHawks have won six games each of the last two NCAAF regular seasons, making this a reasonable total. The non-conference schedule is tricky. Miami (OH) is currently a 17.5-point underdog against Miami (Fla) in the Sept. 1 opener, per college football point spreads. UMass and Delaware State are shaping up as winnable, but the RedHawks also must play Big 12 newcomer Cincinnati.

Looking ahead to MAC play, Miami (OH) is fortunate to get preseason favorite Toledo at home and Buffalo. The RedHawks also do not play Eastern Michigan, which is a good break. Given that, Miami (OH) looks like a good bet to post strong 2023 RedHawks stats.

To Make Playoffs: Not This Year, Not Next Year…

No team from the MAC has ever made the College Football Playoff. That’s not going to change, at least not this season. Or next. Or the year after. Or … OK, you get the point. Miami (OH) has the chance to be very good, but there’s a ceiling to what it can accomplish. The oddsmakers aren’t even considering a CFP spot.
